Carrots stay fresh for a month if stored in ‘proper’ way in kitchen

By staff14 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Carrots are a staple in many recipes but have a short shelf life – luckily, there is a way to keep them fresh for much longer if you know the proper way to store them

Carrots, a crucial ingredient in countless dishes, often face the plight of a rather brief shelf life. However, a bit of savvy storage can extend their freshness considerably. The culprit behind carrots’ rapid moulding is their high water content, making them prime targets for bacterial growth when in contact with air.

Maintaining moisture is key to keeping carrots crisp, so avoiding heat and sunlight is essential to prevent wilting or shrivelling. Kristina Todini, culinary aficionado and Fork in the Road founder, advises that carrots fare well most places in your kitchen provided you employ the right technique to ward off dryness.

She recommends: “The best way to store carrots… is in a cool, dark part of your refrigerator or on the countertop for one to three months.” Stashing carrots in the fridge might be common practice, but this root vegetable’s aversion to humidity fluctuations makes them more vulnerable to spoilage each time the fridge door swings open.

A damp environment can hasten mould, while too little moisture leads to dehydration and drooping, reports the Express. To combat this, encapsulate your carrots in an impermeable container to banish any lingering air.

Whether it’s a sealable storage bag available on Amazon or dunking them in a water-filled jar, these methods promise to preserve your carrots’ vitality.

To keep your carrots crisp, pop them into a container and place it in the fridge’s crisper drawer to shield them from the colder temperatures.

It’s crucial to snip off the carrot tops because they can deplete the moisture from the carrot itself. Kristina offers some sage advice: “Storing carrots in the refrigerator is a great way to maintain freshness to cook with them when you’re ready.”

When it comes to keeping carrots on the countertop or in a cupboard, ensure they’re out of direct sunlight and housed somewhere cool – definitely not near heat-emitting appliances like stoves or ovens.

In case you opt for room temperature, avoid washing the carrots beforehand since this strips away some of the natural protection of their skin that aids in preservation.

By sealing carrots in an airtight container, you can prolong their freshness. However, be vigilant by regularly inspecting them and discard any that start to deteriorate, as one spoiled carrot can affect the rest.

Echoing her earlier guidance, Kristina emphasises: “Carrots are great for storing at room temperature. Carrots are a root vegetable that decomposes more slowly than other high-water vegetables like squash or even other root vegetables like radishes.”

She further explained that carrots can quickly deteriorate in quality if not properly stored: “If you store carrots as is without taking the proper steps to help them retain moisture (cutting off their leaves, etc) they dry out and lose their quality in about a week.”
