‘Chat GPT told me to come to A&E and it’s a good job it did’

When a woman used Chat GPT to diagnose herself after she sustained an injury, she headed to A&E but was wondering whether she should be there – but doctors reassured her she’d done the right thing

A woman admitted that she used Chat GPT to help diagnose herself after sustaining an injury, and doctors reiterated that it was a good thing she headed to the hospital. Holli, who posts on TikTok as @hair.queen.holli, explained that she’d been bitten by a spider “a little over a week ago” and the bite was getting “progressively worse”.

Holli, who lives in Wolfforth, Texas, explained that she’d been “vomiting for the past few days” and she hadn’t “been able to keep down water” so she was considering seeking medical attention. But when she woke up the morning after and her “arm was numb,” she knew something was seriously wrong.

“So I asked Chat GPT what I should do, like if I should go to the emergency room, and he said yes, your symptoms are a ton of red flags, you need to go immediately,” Holli explained.

Holli decided to go to A&E and explained her situation, saying that she didn’t know whether she should be there, and Chat GPT had told her to come.

“They looked at it and said, ‘Yeah, you should be here’. So now here I am,” Holli shared.

She explained that the bite was “red, hot, and numb” saying it was “not good”.

The doctor told her that the “skin tissue was dying” or was “already dead,” she couldn’t remember. “So it’s not good, and it is an emergency,” Holli reiterated.

She did say that she was “embarrassed” to be there, but she was “thankful” that Chat GPT had advised her to go and get seen to.

In the comments, people warned the woman that she may have been bitten by a brown recluse spider.

Brown recluse spiders are a species of spider native to the central and southern United States. They are known for their violin-shaped marking on their back, though not all spiders have a clearly visible marking. These spiders tend to live in dark, undisturbed areas such as basements, closets, or woodpiles.

A bite from a brown recluse spider can be serious, though not all bites result in severe symptoms.

The bite is often painless at first, but within several hours, it may become red, swollen, and tender. In some cases, the bite can develop into a blister and then an open sore or ulcer, which may take weeks to heal.

Some people experience mild symptoms, while others may develop more severe reactions, including fever, chills, body aches, and, in rare cases, a severe skin lesion or systemic illness.

Prompt medical attention is recommended if you suspect you have been bitten by a brown recluse, especially if you notice worsening pain, spreading redness, or signs of infection.
