If you’re looking for a cheap and easy way to make your home warmer, you might want to consider this simple tip
Energy bills, particularly heating costs, are weighing heavily on millions of families right now. It’s no secret that better insulation means your heating works more efficiently and your bills stay lower.
The trouble is, most insulation options come with a hefty price tag and require disruptive building work. When money’s tight, that’s simply not realistic for many households.
That’s why Stephen Hankinson, energy efficiency expert at Electric Radiators Direct, is encouraging families across the UK to try one straightforward hack that could help retain more warmth, without cranking up the thermostat.
He suggests concentrating on windows, which account for 20% of a room’s heat loss. Even minor adjustments to insulate your windows can make a noticeable difference to both your energy bills and your home’s cosiness.
This is where cling film comes into play, the expert says. He noted: “Putting cling film on the inside of your windows may seem odd, but this creates an extra layer of insulation by trapping air between the glass and the plastic.
“It’s also a much cheaper alternative to ‘official’ insulating films.”
Whilst it won’t match the performance of triple glazing, it should deliver some welcome savings on your energy bills for a tiny fraction of what other insulation methods would cost.
The technique works best in rooms with single-glazed windows, or spaces with lots of glass like conservatories and orangeries.
Before you start, measure your windows carefully and give them a thorough clean. It’s also worth waiting for a dry, warm day to ensure the film sticks properly.
When applying it, use a soft cloth or your hands to smooth out the cling film, making sure it adheres well. Take care not to tear the film as you work.
Double-check the edges and surface of the cling film to make sure there aren’t any gaps or loose sections – it needs to be tightly sealed and smooth to deliver “the best insulation.”
