Chelsea’s two Alejandro Garnacho concerns as final decision made on Man Utd exit

Alejandro Garnacho faces little future at Manchester United and a move to Chelsea now appears set to be on the agenda for the Argentine forward after falling down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim

Chelsea are finally set to offer Alejandro Garnacho a Manchester United escape route. Garnacho, 21, has little future at Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim.

Chelsea have been linked with him all summer and with just a few days of the transfer window to go, the Blues are edging towards a deal. Chelsea are close to an agreement with United that will see them pay between £35-£40m for the Argentine forward.

The Red Devils had initially benchmarked his price against the £50m that Arsenal paid for Noni Madueke earlier this summer. Should the move go through as expected, it will bring an end to a five-year spell at Old Trafford for Garnacho.

He was signed as a teenager from Atletico Madrid in 2020. Garnacho has gone on to make 144 appearances for United in all competitions, scoring on 26 occasions.

He helped United to the Carabao Cup in 2023 and won the FA Cup the following campaign. Chelsea have been conducting checks on Garnacho throughout the summer ahead of their swoop.

They have reportedly been getting information on his character, as well as his approach to work. But they are aware that the proof will be in his performances at Stamford Bridge.

Garnacho’s exit could potentially be the first stage of a clear out ahead of Monday’s deadline. Striker Rasmus Hojlund is also expected to depart, following a tricky couple of seasons in the North West. Napoli are the frontrunners for his services.

Brazilian misfit Antony could also leave over the next couple of days, with Real Betis keen to take him back to Spain. Kobbie Mainoo and Andre Onana also face uncertain futures at Old Trafford, albeit they both started in Wednesday evening’s Carabao Cup clash against Grimsby Town.

Speaking about the midfielder’s future ahead of the game, Amorim said: “They just need to fight for the places, and then everything can change. Sometimes one is playing, in other moments, other guys are going to play, and we have the cups, so we’re going to have a lot of games for everybody.”

“We have three games this week, we have quality players, and we need to do rotation to try to win every game,” the United manager added. “All the players are available. Then we will make the choice to get the best starting XI to win every game.”
