The Willie Mullins’ trained horse Galopin Des Champs was looking for a third successive Gold Cup and a place among Cheltenham Festival’s pantheon of greats
Galopin Des Champs could NOT claim a Cheltenham Gold Cup hat-trick as Inothewayurthinkin claimed victory.
Willie Mullins’ son, Patrick, described Galopin Des Champs as “the masterpiece of Willie’s career”, and the nine-year-old was a major odds-on favourite to land the Festival’s biggest prize for a third successive year.
But three successive Gold Cups was not to be as jockey Mark Walsh claimed victory for JP McManus’ Inothewayurthinkin. The Gavin Cromwell-trained horse will also now go looking for Grand National glory at Aintree.
“You have to enjoy these moments, they’re so long in the making” said McManus. “It’s a very exciting time and I’ll treasure it.”
Inothewayurthinkin was supplemented for the race at a cost of £25,000 and that decision paid off in style for McManus.
It looked as though 8-13 favourite Galopin Des Champs was about to become the first three-time winner since Best Mate when he moved ahead two out, but Inothewayurthinkin (15-2) was cruising in behind and in the end he fairly sprinted home to win by six lengths.
