Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn will renew their rivalry on Saturday night in the fourth instalment of the Eubank-Benn rivalry which stretches back 35 years
Chris Eubank Sr lashed out at Nigel Benn as the former rivals joined their sons on stage for a four-way face-off.
The fathers were involved in one of British boxing’s greatest rivalries when they clashed three decades ago. Eubank Sr won their first meeting before the rematch was scored a controversial draw. Thirty five years on, their sons will meet on Saturday night for their own sequel in London.
And as Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn came together, they were upstaged by their famous fathers. The Eubanks were reunited hours before Chris Jr’s points victory over Benn seven months ago. They have since repaired their strained relationship having not spoken for the previous four years.
And Eubank Sr couldn’t help but steal the limelight as he accused his former arch enemy of lying about him being paid to appear at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April. “You can’t pay me anything,” he said. “I’m here for heart, love, what I’ve lived by throughout my career, what has made me this, living and behaving with patience, kindness, never envied, not proud, boast, rude, self-seeking, easily-angered, keep no record of wrongs, the consciousness of the Christ.
“Whoever told Nigel I was paid, whatever sum of money, they lied to you. You spouting what they’ve told you makes you a liar, expose who told you, clean your name otherwise … who in the future is going to believe you on anything you say?
“I’ve always walked the straight line, fought the good fight, finish the race, kept the faith, now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, not only for me, but also to all those who’ve longed for his appearing, that’s how you become a true entertainer that lasts.
Benn responded: “It’s not about me; it’s about my son and Chris Jr. I’m not taking it on board, it’s going over my head. What he has or hasn’t done doesn’t bother me, but I’ll have it all day long with him.”
Earlier, Eubank Jr said of the accusations: “There is something I need to address first and foremost. Eddie, Conor, Nigel, over the last few months have been making accusations and the notion that my father was paid to make an appearance in April.
“[These are] bare-faced lies, anyone with a brain knows it’s not true, extremely disrespectful to my father and myself, and the Saudis to imply they’d pay him to do that, just getting it out in the open, never happened and for these men to stop lying to the public.”
