Christina Applegate shares with fans that her 13-year-old daughter is ‘sobbing’ after Donald Trump’s election win as she fears her ‘rights as a woman may be taken away’
Christina Applegate has shared her 13-year-old daughter’s heartbreaking reaction to the US Presidential election results.
It was announced yesterday that Donald Trump, 78, and the Republican Party had been re-elected into government after a tense campaign against Democratic leader Kamala Harris, 60, marking the first time a former president has returned for a second non-consecutive term.
Following the news, many who call the US home took to social media to share their reactions, including the 52-year-old Dead to Me actress who went on an anti-Trump rant—something she later apologised for.
Writing on X, the star told fans to “unfollow” her if they disagree with her upset reaction following Trump’s win and told them her teenage daughter, Sadie Grace, whom she shares with Dutch musician Martijn LeNoble, was “sobbing” for a heartbreaking reason.
“Why? Give me your reasons why?????” She wrote. “My child is sobbing because her rights as a woman may be taken away. Why? And if you disagree, please unfollow me”.
Later in the day, she returned to the social media platform, once again urging fans who voted for the returning president to unfollow her as she claimed they “voted against female rights” and “Against disability rights”.
“Please unfollow me if you voted against female rights. Against disability rights. Yeah, that. Unfollow me because what you did is unreal. Don’t want followers like this. So yeah. Done. Also after today I will be shutting down this fan account that I have had for so many years because this is sick,” she tweeted.
After her comments, Applegate appeared to revise them and issued an apology in which she told fans she was “still reeling and sobbing”, she added: “But I’m not angry anymore. Just going to go back to my bubble and watch a s**t ton of Bravo shows So peace to all. I suggest you do the same. Very soothing”.
The election and what it means for women’s and disabled people’s rights is one that is close to Applegate’s heart after she was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease, Multiple Sclerosis, in 2021.
The disease is a lifelong condition that affects the brain and spinal cord, causing side effects such as vision problems, numbness, and weakness in the limbs, as well as balance and walking difficulties and memory issues.
Currently, there is no cure for the disease, resulting in the actress telling fans that she may never return to acting after wrapping her Netflix series last year.
Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2023, she said: “I can’t even imagine going to set right now. This is a progressive disease. I don’t know if I’m going to get worse.”
While it’s unclear exactly what Trump’s win means for people with the disease, the criminally convicted president-elect will likely enforce changes to America’s public health insurance programs and impose new barriers to abortion and other reproductive care.
As it stands, 13 states in the US have banned abortion with little to no exception, and a further 28 restrict the procedure. Despite being partially responsible for the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022, Trump has stated he will not sign a national abortion ban and said decisions about abortion restrictions should be left to state governments.
Regardless, his re-election has caused mass upset among people in the US including celebrities. Billie Eilish declared Trump’s win is a “war on women”, while Jamie Lee Curtis said his return is a “sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time.”
