Clean skirting boards and keep dust away ‘for 3 months’ by using one household item

By staff22 February 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Cleaning skirting boards can be tricky, but a professional cleaning company has shared a top tip for getting them sparkling – and it’s a bit of an unusual one

Skirting boards are an essential element of home decor, providing a neat finish to the base of your walls. However, cleaning them can often be a daunting task, especially if you have detailed skirting boards that tend to accumulate dust in their intricate designs.

The experts at Calibre Cleaning suggest using tumble dryer sheets as a solution to this problem. Surprisingly, these laundry items can effectively remove and prevent significant dust build-up.

The trick is to rub a clean skirting board with a laundry dryer sheet, which due to its static nature, helps deter dust from sticking and accumulating. Besides “repelling dust”, tumble dryer sheets also leave your home smelling wonderful, reports the Express.

They explained: “Tumble dryer sheets are packed with antibacterial properties and are perfect for repelling odours and dust, so you don’t need to clean as frequently. They also leave a fresh scent behind and make your room smell great.”

According to the professionals, if you perform this quick task three to four times a year, your skirting boards “won’t need dusting for three months”. However, for skirting boards with grease and stains, a soap and water solution can do wonders.

Simply mix soap and water in a bucket, dip a sponge into the mixture, and wring it out thoroughly.

Swipe across the surface of the boards, repeating until they’re spotless. Once done, use a slightly damp cloth to remove any foam residue left by your sponge, and dry the boards with a microfibre cloth.

Alternatively, if you own a steam cleaner, it can do wonders too. Steam cleaners are “highly effective for removing smudges and dirt” from various surfaces, as the steam loosens stains for easy wiping.

However, for safety’s sake, we suggest trying out the steam cleaner on a small, hidden part of your skirting board first to make sure the paint doesn’t get damaged.
