Cleaning influencer Georgia, from the UK, has shared a number of ways you can keep spiders and bugs out of your house for good – and you won’t need to use any harsh chemicals to do it
A cleaning guru has revealed her ultimate hacks for keeping spiders at bay, ensuring your home remains a no-go zone for the eight-legged visitors without resorting to harsh chemicals.
With spring in full bloom, it’s likely you’ve noticed an uptick in spiders and other bugs making unwelcome appearances in your abode.
To combat these unwanted guests, TikTok star ‘Clean with Georgia’ has divulged her top tips for deterring spiders and bugs from crossing your threshold, all without the need for chemical-laden bug repellents.
“If you hate spiders and bugs in your home, then this video is for you,” she declared, before delving into her six-step guide to spider-proofing your home.
1. Peppermint spray
“This spray is only made up of two ingredients, so it’s definitely worth trying,” Georgia suggested.
Simply mix half a cup of water with 15-20 drops of peppermint oil in an empty spray bottle. Vigorously shake the concoction before spritzing around doors, windows, or any favoured spider hangouts.
The potent scent of peppermint is overwhelming for spiders, deterring them from entering if you spritz it around potential entry points.
2. Cinnamon sticks
“The second hack, place some cinnamon sticks near entry points,” Georgia advised, noting its similarity to peppermint oil in effectiveness.
She added: “It’s a hot spice and they do not like it. This also deters ants as well, so it’s a great little hack.”
3. Mop with peppermint
For a peppermint-infused aroma throughout your home, Georgia also suggests adding a splash of the essential oil to your mop.
“Put some peppermint oil in a mop, therefore deterring any creepy crawlies and giving your floor a clean,” she said.
4. Dust with peppermint
In keeping with the peppermint magic, Georgia recommends dusting in cobweb-prone areas with a peppermint oil-laced duster to keep the spiders at bay.
5. Make a fruit fly catcher
When it comes to those pesky fruit flies, Georgia shares her own experience: “I can’t say I remember the last time I had fruit flies in my house, and that’s because I use apple cider vinegar and a dishsoap solution.”
To replicate her trick, simply mix a bit of apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap in a glass or on a small plate — a surefire lure for fruit flies and a barrier to their multiplication.
“Give it a little mix and it should help any fruit fly problems you have,” she advises, demonstrating by placing the concoction next to her fruit bowl.
6. Clean your bin
Lastly, Georgia emphasises the importance of regular bin cleaning and advocates for a peppermint water mixture to be sprayed onto bins.
“Because spiders love a damp environment, make sure to rub peppermint oil on your bin,” she instructs, as she demonstrates spraying and then wiping down her own bin with the mixture.
And there you have it – an easy guide to keeping those creepy crawlies out this spring!
