A cleaning expert said that one quick and easy hack will help to banish odours in no time from the kitchen and the rest of the home – and it involves a 95p kitchen cupboard staple
If you’re a pet owner, a gym enthusiast, or a fan of cooking with pungent ingredients like fish and garlic, you’ll be all too familiar with the unpleasant odours that can linger in your home for days.
But one cleaning expert has shared a simple trick to banish these unwanted smells quickly and easily. The secret? Baking powder – a staple ingredient that most of us already have in our kitchen cupboards and can be purchased from a supermarket for as little as 95p.
Colby Short, CEO and co-founder of GetAgent, explained that the best way to use baking powder as a deodoriser is to sprinkle it onto a surface, let it sit, and then vacuum it up. This versatile baking ingredient can even replace scented cat litter, as it’s “less off-putting” to your feline friend while still effectively masking the smell of their litter box.
Colby advised: “Baking powder is a great, natural deodoriser. Sprinkle some onto a soft surface you want to clean, allow it to sit – overnight if you can – and then vacuum it up the next day.” He added: “Top tip – you can also use baking powder instead of buying scented litter if you have cats. It’s less off-putting to them so will keep your furry friend happy, while diminishing the smell inside your home.
“Our furry friends are as much a part of the family as the rest of us, and particularly throughout the last few years – pets have become an absolute lifeline to many of us in terms of companionship, and offering opportunities to get out of the house.”
Baking powder is a combo of bicarbonate of soda – also known as baking soda – and cream of tartar. Bicarbonate of soda is famed for its multiple uses, including being mixed with water to create a paste that’s a hit among cleaning enthusiasts for removing stubborn kitchen stains.
One woman recently shared how you can use bicarb to restore the brightness of your white towels – simply by popping it in your washing machine.
