Mattress stains, such as blood, sweat and coffee, can be removed with a simple home remedy that cleaning fans say ‘disintegrates’ them – here’s what you need to do

Stained mattresses are not a nice sight, but it turns out they’re not as tough to tackle as you might think.

Cleaning expert were a saviour to a woman in dire straits, searching for ways to banish those stubborn blotches. Your mattress could be harbouring nasties ranging from coffee spills and blood to dirt, grub, and even perspiration – all the stuff you’d fancy getting rid of at the speed of light, yet probably haven’t a clue about where to start.

But when one savvy cleaner stumbled upon a budget-friendly marvel to erase mattress stains, she wasn’t about to keep it under wraps and took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook group to spill the beans.

Proudly showing off her before-and-after mattress snaps, the woman posted: “Just wanted to share this tip I found online a while ago when I was struggling with sweat and blood stains on my mattress. I followed the baking soda and white vinegar natural method and it worked. The stain had disintegrated. I was very impressed.”

For those who already have these handy ingredients knocking about at home, you’re golden, but if not, you can pick up white vinegar from Tesco for a mere 35p and bag yourself some baking soda from The Range at £1.49, bringing the total cost of this nifty clean-up trick to under two quid – vastly cheaper than ditching a grubby mattress.

She didn’t just drop the bombshell and leave; she also detailed the steps needed for this method to work its magic on those pesky stains. Kick things off by scattering baking soda right on the spot, followed by a spritz of white vinegar just enough to coat it.

When using the vinegar solution, remember that a little goes a long way. The goal is to moisten the mattress, not drench it. Over-saturating the mattress can lead to mould and mildew, which will then become another problem you’ll have to tackle. After applying the solution, let it fizz for 30 minutes before blotting it away with a clean cloth.

It’s crucial to ensure your mattress is completely dry before replacing any bedding to avoid mould and mildew. To expedite the drying process, open your bedroom windows or use a fan briefly before reapplying your bedding.
