Mould is a common problem during the winter months as the cold weather can cause condensation on your windows and items like curtains and blinds, which creates the perfect damp conditions for mould to grow
Brits are battling the chill and damp as mould continues to invade our homes amidst the frosty temperatures.
The cold snap is causing more condensation on windows, which can drip onto curtains and blinds, creating ideal conditions for mould growth. But there’s hope yet, thanks to the followers of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, who has amassed over four million Instagram fans.
A devoted cleaner took to a Facebook group dedicated to Mrs Hinch, where enthusiasts exchange top-notch cleaning hacks. In this bustling community of over 100,000 members, one user sought advice on eradicating mould from blinds. Jordan Fothergill asked: “Can someone recommend any way I can get mould off blinds, I can’t wash them in the washing machine I’ve tried and they get ruined?” Alongside her query, she posted a photo of white vertical blinds marred by mould spots at the bottom.
Her plea quickly drew a flood of responses, with fellow Mrs Hinch admirers offering their best remedies. Amanda Boom, a fan of Mrs Hinch, shared her successful strategy: “I sprayed mine with Astonish mould spray, left them for 20 minutes then dipped them in warm water and left them to drip dry – came out like new.”
The Facebook user recommended that Jordan snap up Astonish’s Mould and Mildew Trigger Spray, available for a mere £1.20 from Ocado. Meanwhile, Wendy Wilson shared her own tip: “I put mine in the bath with cold water and cheap bleach. Came up lovely.”
Ros Moorhouse chimed in with her routine: “I wash mine in the washing machine all the time. I take them down, take everything off them, put them in a washing bag, or fold them carefully in a pillow case and pin them down. Wash on quick wash, iron over and re hang – lot of work but look lovely when done,” they added.
On another note, one user suggested Jordan should soak her blinds in a tub of varnish and tackle the mould with a small nail brush. Alternatively, Emma Bullement recounted her success story with the Astonish mould spray, advising to leave the blinds for ten minutes before rinsing for a ‘nice easy fix’.
Margaret Bunts, also an advocate for the Astonish product, advised: “Mould and mildew spray and use a magic sponge.” Maureen Round was astonished by the results: “The lining of my curtains looked like that – I sprayed them with mould and mildew cleaner and was shocked the next day when it had disappeared.”
“HG spray mould and mildew,” Diane Riches contributed. Urusula Durman endorsed this too, saying: “HG mould spray is amazing.” Lindsay Williams boasted about her blinds: “I just sprayed mine with mould and mildew spray with an old towel underneath, they came up like new.”
Paula Cairns’ shared her unique cleaning tip, telling everyone: “Soak them in the bath with dishwasher tablets. Just done mine and they look like the day I got them.” On the other hand, Anne-Louise McCourt Fell detailed her process saying: “I laid the slats in the bath four at a time, wet them, sprayed with Astonish Mould and Mildew spray, left for 10 minutes, turned them over and sprayed again, left for another 10 minutes.”
She continued, explaining: “Keep repeating until totally clean, then rinse. I hung them back up and put old sweet tubs under them to catch the drips.” She further added: “My weights and chains were an off-white colour which I never liked, so got new ones off Amazon. Has been a great job and saved a fortune. Good luck.”
