Cole Palmer has become known as one of the Premier League’s best penalty takers after racking up a spotless record for Chelsea, but that has now come to an end after his effort was saved against Leicester on Sunday
Chelsea star Cole Palmer lost his perfect penalty record on Sunday after missing the first spot kick of his career against Leicester City.
Palmer has forged a reputation as an expert from 12 yards after two excellent seasons at Stamford Bridge saw him convert 12 attempts in a row in the Premier League, but that immaculate record is no more after seeing his effort thwarted by Foxes keeper Mads Hermansen.
Hermansen deserves credit for a superb save after getting down well to tip the shot away from the pot, a vital moment for the relegation-threatened Foxes with the score level at 0-0.
Palmer had also netted one spot kick for England and his record put him among some of the best takers in top flight history.
He has now lost the record for most penalties scored without missing, with that landmark returning to Yaya Toure – who netted 11 in a row, just above Dimitar Berbatov (nine) and Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves (both eight).
Palmer could still end his career among the best penalty takers in the league’s history but is still some way off Matt Le Tissier, who scored 25 out of 26 attempts, while Danny Murphy netted 18 out of 19.
His Premier League rival Erling Haaland has 15 penalty goals with one miss and Palmer’s own cool head from the spot has seen him pick up the nickname “Cold Palmer”.
However, Palmer’s agonising moment on Sunday summed up a difficult moment for Palmer, who had done through a dry spell after failing to score or assist since the middle of January.
He is still having a sensational season for Chelsea with 14 goals and six assists, though he has been unable to lift the Blues amid a difficult run of form.
Chelsea managed to secure a narrow 1-0 win over Leicester thanks to Marc Cucurella’s strike on the hour mark, as the Blues improved their recent form after picking up just two wins from six in all competitions, with one of those coming against basement boys Southampton.
Palmer and Chelsea have a huge couple of weeks coming up as they prepare for their UEFA Conference League last-16 second leg against Copenhagen before facing London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham either side of the international break.
