Colombian President Gustavo Petro has been one of the few world leaders to directly stand up to Donald Trump, and referred to him by a hilarious nickname as he revealed a mysterious problem with his US visa
Donald Trump may have a lot of flaws, but no one can deny his talent for making enemies. While the US President is currently cosying up to Vladimir Putin, he seems to be alienating world leaders a bit closer to home – with Colombian President Gustavo Petro the latest to throw down the gauntlet.
Trump is on a roll, with his casual mentions of taking over territories that don’t belong to him leaving many world leaders horrified. Mark Carney, who stepped in as Justin Trudeau’s replacement after the latter stepped down last month, has made it clear that Canada doesn’t want to become America’s ‘51st state.’ Meanwhile, Trump is in constant beef with the leaders of Greenland, which Trump has repeatedly said he’ll either ‘buy’ or take.
Now, in a hilarious press conference, Petro cheekily compared Trump to an infamous cartoon character, throwing shade at the Home Alone 2 star-turned-politician as he said that he wouldn’t be heading to the States any time soon.
Speaking with his cabinet at the Casa de Narino in the Colombian capital, Petro revealed that he’d no longer be attending the United Nations Security Council in New York, and was sending his Foreign Minister in his place instead.
Petro explained: “I can’t go because I think they took away my visa.” Laughing away the baffling political move, he added: “I didn’t need a visa, but oh well. I’ve already seen Donald Duck several times. I’m going to see other things.”
The feud might be thanks to Petro’s status as the first leftist president of Colombia in recent history. And, true to his word, he’s stayed firm against Trump – refusing to accept planes full of migrants and matching Trump’s tariffs cent for cent.
As some world leaders start clapping back against Trump, he also seems to be facing a split with his best buddy Elon Musk. The Tesla founder heavily threw his support and money behind the Republican’s presidential campaign, but has now seen Tesla profits drop by 71% to £308million as people boycott the business thanks to his work as Trump’s co-head of DOGE – with Trump’s tariffs impacting sales even further.
With Trump’s move throwing the worldwide economy into turmoil, he and Musk no longer seem as close as they used to be, and Musk has retorted to throwing barbs online.
Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro – who’s seen as responsible for pushing the tariffs – went to Harvard University. Musk took issue with this on his own platform X, formerly known as Twitter, saying “A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing,” and directly calling Navarro “dumber than a sack of bricks.”
Trump also has issue with the fact that many people thought Musk was more powerful than him, and recently dropped the F-word during a rant after finding out that the entrepreneur planned to attend trade talks in China. “What the f**k is Elon doing there? Make sure he doesn’t go,” he reportedly said due to concerns that Musk’s business interests would lead conversations in the wrong direction.
Musk, of course, is the richest man in the world, so the question remains how Trump will fare without him if more leaders from across the world take a leaf out of Petro’s book and refuse to go along with his plans.
