Common sense prevails with Sean Dyche arrival but big Nottingham Forest question remains

By staff21 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Sean Dyche is a great appointment for Forest, but will owner Evangelos Marinakis give him the time he needs to succeed at the City Ground?

Jeremy joined the Daily Star in 2010 as Manchester football correspondent and for more than a decade has served as our Chief Sports Writer. He provides expert coverage on Manchester United and Manchester City, the Premier League as a whole, and the England football team. Jeremy has covered football, rugby and cricket World Cups, as well as Wimbledon, the golf majors and the Olympics.

A bout of common sense has infiltrated the thought process of Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

In just over a month, Marinakis has gone from ‘Captain Chaos’ to ‘Captain Sensible’, in terms of appointing Ange Postecoglou, then replacing him with Sean Dyche.

Postecoglou was a gamble which blew up in the face of Marinakis. But the Greek has now wiped the egg off, and made a decision which should turn Forest into solid competition in the Premier League again.

Dyche might be a pragmatic manager. But he is also one with a wealth of experience in the top flight, who can get the best out of the talent at his disposal, with a style of play which suits the team he has taken charge of.

In short, he’s a bit like Nuno Espírito Santo. Dyche is not daft. He’s engineered a contract that runs until 2027, guaranteeing him significant compensation should Marinakis do what he tends to do best, and decide fire another manager.

Dyche, 54, has become Forest’s third manager this season, after all. But Dyche will be banking on succeeding at the City Ground, like he has done in his previous roles elsewhere.

He spent a decade turning Burnley into a top flight force on a shoestring budget. He won promotion twice, and even led the Clarets into Europe for the first time since 1967.

And while he might have lost more games than he won as Everton manager, he took over a club in absolute chaos, keeping them in the top flight against the odds.

Having started his playing career at Forest without making the first team, Dyche knows all about the values and tradition the club has.

The problem Dyche will have is this. Having secured European qualification last season, Nuno set the bar high. But it remains an unrealistic one, and Marinakis cannot expect this to become the norm under future managers like Dyche.

The arrival of Dyche proves Forest are in a relegation fight instead. And he will need time to stamp his mark on the side. So Marinakis needs to take a breath, give Dyche what he needs, and show him the respect he has earned.
