Condensation will clear and won’t affect your windows again if wiped with 2 natural items

By staff27 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

It’s a problem that affects millions of Brits every winter – but there’s a simple way to stop condensation in its tracks

Condensation forming on windows is an incredibly widespread problem that countless households grapple with across different property types, from houses to flats.

The issue becomes particularly acute during the latter part of autumn and throughout winter, when heated indoor air collides with freezing window panes, producing condensation that generates moisture and water droplets across your windows, potentially leading to dampness and mould growth.

Bedrooms bear the brunt of this predicament, as moisture expelled through breathing and body warmth accumulates in the space whilst you’re asleep, adding to condensation development.

Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one member sought guidance on how she might “put a stop” to the daily problem of window condensation.

Whilst some suggested opening windows, the overwhelming majority of replies appeared to favour wiping windows down with washing-up liquid, reports the Express.

Allison Gibb Annand commented: “Simply put a good squish of washing up liquid on a cloth, wipe all over the windows while they’re dry, and hey presto, condensation-free windows. Don’t ask me how it works, but as someone who grew up in a single-glazed house, I can tell you that it just does.”

Brenda McArthur posted: “Wipe your windows with a cloth and washing up liquid, which helps so much with condensation.”

Several users also suggested using vinegar. Sarah Swire said: “Wiping windows with washing-up liquid and vinegar really works. Need to do ours. Definitely helped last year.”

Clare Magee commented: “Dry tea towel with a small amount of Fairy Liquid and vinegar – wipe on windows – it will soap up a bit but just leave to dry – put the damp tea towel in a plastic bag and use again next time – should last a couple of days depending on how bad the condensation is.”

Specialists at Cardiff Window Cleaner LTD also backed this approach. They said: “If you wake up and find condensation on your bedroom windows, a great way to clear away the condensation and prevent it from coming back is by mixing a homemade solution.

“Simply mix two cups of water and two cups of white vinegar, then add a couple of drops of dishwashing soap.”

Transfer this blend into a spray bottle and apply it directly onto your window.

The method works because the white vinegar forms a “protective barrier”, whilst the soap “breaks down the surface tension of the droplets” on your window.

They recommended using a spray bottle to establish a very thin defensive coating, which will evaporate on its own.

You can use a sponge or a piece of cloth, but it will take longer to dry, particularly if the air is already too humid.
