A convicted murderer is on the run after failing to return to prison from day release, as members of the public are told not to approach him.

James Meehan is serving a life sentence at HMP Magilligan in Co Londonderry – but failed to return after being on day release, sparking a huge search by police. Officers engaged in looking for him have encouraged Meehan to hand himself in right away.

Members of the public have been asked to get in touch if they have information which may help locate Meehan, but not to approach him. A police spokeswoman said: “Police would also appeal directly to James to hand himself in.”

“We are appealing to anyone who has seen him, or who knows of his whereabouts, not to approach him directly but to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1251 09/12/24. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous.

Meehan was found guilty of murdering Londonderry man James McFadden outside his home in 2007. The victim died after being attacked outside his home after he had attended a wedding reception in Co Donegal.
