Coronation Street star shares her fertility heartache after breast cancer battle

By staff23 March 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

The former Coronation Street star has opened up about her family life and the devastating reality of not being able to have more children due to a heartbreaking diagnosis

Victoria Ekanoye, best known for her role as Angie Appleton on Coronation Street in 2018 and 2019, has opened up about the devastating reality of not being able to have more children due to her battle with breast cancer and a subsequent womb operation.

The 43-year-old actress, who shares her four-year-old son Theo with her partner Jonny Lomas, faced a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a form of breast cancer, shortly after giving birth. While she’s now thriving, the treatment she underwent has had a lasting impact on her fertility.

Victoria, who also lives with sickle cell disease, reflected on the tough years following her cancer diagnosis, explaining how Theo became a beacon of hope for her family.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror at the Mariposa Ball, she reflects on her life, saying: “I’m great, I’m great. I’m busy. My son – who was, gosh, he wasn’t even one when I had my double mastectomy, but he’s four now, going on 14. Running us ragged and just the most incredible little boy in all.”

The former Corrie star shared how her son gave her the strength to push through the darkest days. “You always need that pillar of hope and strength when you’re going through adversity, and he was that for us. So, as a family, we’re just thriving, and watching him is glorious.”

While many fans often ask whether she and Jonny plan to expand their family, Victoria revealed that it’s no longer an option due to the ovary-suppressing medication she had to take after her breast cancer treatment.

“No, well, people always ask me this question. Unfortunately, with the medication that I had to take from the back of the breast cancer, they turned my ovaries off.”

Now that she’s completed the treatment, she’s aware that age and her sickle cell condition make conceiving incredibly difficult. Victoria added: “So now that I’ve finished that medication, I’m 43 now, so I always have to think about the fact that I have sickle cell too. And my fertility rate goes against us, should I say.”

Instead of focusing on what she can’t have, Victoria is embracing the life she has with Theo and Jonny, choosing to cherish every moment with her family.

She says: “We’re happy and grateful to have Theo. I don’t want to jinx it or risk anything. Johnny’s the same, my partner, and we just want to cherish what we have and make the most of the family that we’ve been blessed with.”

Despite the challenges, Victoria is keeping busy with exciting new projects. “Oh, yes! I’m actually about to start shooting a new series called Falcon in, uh, probably July or August in Malta, which is like a TV version of The Da Vinci Code, which I’m very excited for.”

As a performer with a deep love for the stage, she also hinted at a possible return to theatre.

“I miss the stage. It’s where I began. I began in The Lion King. So, there’s always a part of me that loves being on the stage and singing and having that live audience interaction. So, I don’t know, I guess, watch this space!”
