A Costco shopper has shared the ‘secret’ behind the price tags in the wholesale store, and how you can use it to save money on your next shop—- but not everyone is convinced
Costco has grown tremendously popular amongst those seeking excellent value on their weekly shop. But just how brilliant a bargain are you actually securing when browsing this warehouse retailer?
Well, it transpires there’s a system behind their pricing strategy, and you can utilise this knowledge to work out precisely what’s worth purchasing and what should remain on the shelf.
Mark Tilbury, who shares business and financial advice on his social platforms, has turned to TikTok to expose what he says are the secrets behind Costco’s pricing structure and how you can ensure you’re genuinely securing a fantastic deal.
He explained: “If the price ends in .99, it’s regular pricing, so there’s no rush to buy it. If it ends in a .97, then it’s on sale, so it could be worth buying. Third, if it ends in a .39, .49, or .79, it’s a manufacturer’s special, so check their website and compare prices.”
Should the product’s label feature a star or plus symbol, it won’t be restocked, so Mark recommends snapping it up immediately if it’s something you genuinely desire.
Meanwhile, if the price concludes with. 00, then Mark reveals you’ve discovered a “manager’s special”.
Mark’s supporters were swift to respond to the footage, with one penning: “Thank you for actually explaining these techniques well.”
Another chimed in: “The fact that he know this and exposes the knowledge to us in his content is epic.”

However, not everyone was chuffed with the hacks, with one disgruntled commenter penning: “I don’t need these hacks. I just go in, buy what’s on my list, and get out. If I’m buying things ONLY because it’s on sale, it’s not really saving money. If what I want happens to be on sale, that’s saving money.”
Another chimed in: “Previous Costco manager here…. some of these are accurate, some are not.”
They further clarified: “The asterisk doesn’t mean a product is going to never return. Sometimes it returns with new packaging or a new item number or is seasonal and will come back.”
