Cristiano Ronaldo’s proposal comes six years after Georgina Rodriguez’s honest remark

Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez have announced their engagement and the football icon’s partner previously made her thoughts clear about marriage

Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez are celebrating their engagement after years of dealing with wedding rumours. The couple have been together since meeting in Madrid in 2016.

Rodriguez, 31, and Ronaldo, 40, first crossed paths during her time working in a Gucci store in the Spanish capital. On Monday, Ronaldo’s partner shared that he had proposed by posting a picture of a huge diamond ring on social media.

The caption on the post read: “Yes I do. In this and in all my lives.” However, it is an announcement that has been a long time coming for Rodriguez, who shared her desire to marry Ronaldo as far back as 2019.

“Every couple wants to get married and I would love to personally,” Rodriguez told Spanish magazine Hola! “Right how we have priorities and a lot of responsibilities, although in the future it would be marvellous to become Cristiano’s wife.”

Rodriguez has risen to fame through her relationship with Ronaldo, forging a modelling career and launching her own clothing line. In 2022, she was the subject of the Netflix documentary ‘I Am Georgina’, where she once again discussed her thoughts on marriage.

She said: “They’re always joking about the wedding. ‘When is the wedding?’ Since Jennifer Lopez’s song The Ring Or When came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me.”

The couple have two children together and Rodriguez also helps to raise Ronaldo’s three children from previous relationships. He previously claimed that he was waiting for the right moment to propose.

“When we get that click. Like everything with our life, and she knows what I’m talking about,” he told Piers Morgan in 2022. “It could be in a year or it could be in six months or it could be in a month. I’m 1000% sure that it’ll happen.”

During the 2018 World Cup there was speculation that the couple had become engaged after Rodriguez was pictured wearing an expensive ring during a Portugal match, though this was quickly quashed. There had also been subsequent rumours about secret wedding ceremonies. While Rodriguez may have had to wait for a ring, Ronaldo has spoken lovingly about their relationship in the past.

“She’s a fantastic person,” Ronaldo said of his new fiancée during an ITV interview in 2019. “Yes, it is [true love]. Yes, it was [like magic meeting for the first time]. Gio is part of me. She helps me so much.

“Of course, I’m in love with her. She’s the mum of my kids. I’m so passionate for her. She’s my friend, we have conversations. I open my heart to her. She opened her heart to me.

“[She’s the greatest love of my life]… Why not [get married]? Not now! Not in this interview. Why not, one day… We’ll one day, for sure. It’s my mum’s dream.”

Ronaldo has seemingly spared no expense on Rodriguez’s engagement ring, estimated to be worth around £7.4million ($10m). The former Manchester United star, who is set to earn £492million over the next two years at Al-Nassr, should have no trouble adapting to married life as the football icon regularly refers to Rodriguez as his wife.

In an appearance on the WHOOP podcast last year, Ronaldo mentioned speaking with his wife as part of his morning routine. During an awards ceremony in December, Ronaldo was named Best Middle Eastern player and again called Rodriguez his wife. “It’s a big pleasure to win this trophy. My oldest son is here, and my wife is here,” he said.

At the start of the year, in a post celebrating Rodriguez’s 31st birthday, Ronaldo wrote on Instagram: “For the mother, partner, friend, my wife… happy birthday, love. Your light illuminates us and your love infects us.”
