Cruise ship fans have shared some of the food you should always avoid at the buffet and it’s advice you might want to heed if you’re planning a trip at sea soon
Cruise ship holidaymakers have been warned to be wary of certain buffet foods on board.
Seasoned cruisers have voiced their opinions about the food you’re likely to encounter in the shared dining areas while cruising, with some of it being labelled as ‘disgusting’. This advice is worth taking note of, considering how central the buffet – usually included in all-inclusive packages – is to many cruise holidays.
On Reddit, experienced cruisers offered their top buffet tips, with one individual cautioning which items to avoid. One user suggested that it’s preferable to request freshly cooked food rather than settling for dishes that have been left out for extended periods.

They advised: “Leave the barely cooked bacon on the line, ask for the crispy cooked bacon and they usually have a bucket of it behind the counter.”
Another Redditor recommended getting your scrambled eggs freshly prepared at the omelette station instead of opting for the pre-made ones. They stated: “If the scrambled eggs look disgusting on the line because they’re too wet or you don’t like powdered eggs, ask the omelette station to make dry scrambled eggs.”
A fellow egg-lover chimed in: “They can add cheese/tomato/ham etc. in your scrambled eggs, plus the eggs are fresh and not powdered.”
While you might think you’re stuck with whatever’s laid out at the buffet, it turns out there could be room to wiggle according to some savvy cruisers.
Sharing their wisdom on Reddit, one user recommended: “If you don’t see something you want, ask for it. My eldest eats plain yoghurt every day for breakfast. She asked and the head server made sure a bowl was waiting each morning for the rest of the cruise.”
Cruising along the ocean might bring an air of adventure, but eating the same spread can get tiresome after several days. If you find your taste buds craving variety, don’t hesitate to mix things up.
For those who love a bit of coffee with their sweet treat, whipping up an affogato is a cinch by plunging some soft-serve or scoop of ice cream into a hot cuppa joe. And if that’s not indulgent enough, feel free to slather cakes and brownies in the creamy caffeinated concoction.
And when it comes to burgers while on board, another cruiser chipped in with a juicy tip: “This should be obvious to some but you’re allowed to customise your burger.
“You can ask for bacon, double patties, extra cheese, etc. A lot of people just ordered regular burgers and didn’t know they could customise them until they saw us do it.”
Some individuals noted that you could pick items from the salad and antipasti buffet section to be included in bespoke dishes at chef stations.
One person revealed: “My husband likes to grab artichokes from the salad station and have them put them on his pizza!” Another individual highlighted: “The options are endless! I’ve grabbed artichokes to add to pasta.”
A third cruiser commented: “I would get other stuff I liked at the salad station and had them use it for the stir-fry. Best one was on new years day I got fries from the sandwich station cheese from the buffet and gravy from the carving station. Cruise ship poutine.”
