Crystal Palace win FA Cup as Eberechi Eze goal makes history vs Man City – 5 talking points

CRYSTAL PALACE 1-0 MAN CITY: In-form winger Eberechi Eze was the hero for the Eagles at Wembley on Saturday as they ended their long wait for a major trophy in the FA Cup final

Crystal Palace celebrated the first FA Cup in their history after squeezing past Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley. The Eagles were dominated for large swaths of the game but did enough to squeeze past their expensively-assembled opponents.

Eberechi Eze polished off a lethal counter-attack to shock City against the run of play. But Palace should arguably have been reduced to ten men after Dean Henderson seemingly handballed.

Predictably, the Palace goalkeeper was then at the heart of things once more as he saved Omar Marmoush’s controversial penalty. Oliver Glasner’s men thought they had doubled their lead through Daniel Munoz only to see VAR chalk off the strike due to offside.

Wave after wave of City attacks were repelled by Palace, who remained firm to secure the trophy. Here are all of the talking points from Wembley:

Eze keeps up hot form

Eze has been Palace’s star of the season so far and heading into the FA Cup final, he had found the net in each of his last four appearances. So it was no surprise to see him give the Eagles the lead midway through the first-half at Wembley.

Jean-Philippe Mateta did excellently to hold the ball up and launch a lethal counter-attack. Daichi Kamada and Daniel Munoz combined passes before the maurauding defender whipped a brilliant ball into the box.

Manuel Akanji had only afforded Eze a yard but that was all he needed to sweep home a brilliant finish – sending the red and half of the stadium in raptures.

Henderson’s lucky escape

Dean Henderson had kept Palace in the game early on with a fantastic save from Haaland’s acrobatic effort. And the pair were then involved in hugely controversial moment before the break.

As the Norwegian attempted to latch onto a long ball, he was beaten to it by the Palace goalkeeper who upon a replay, clearly patted it away with his hand when outside of the area. VAR intervened but decided that it was not enough of a goalscoring opportunity to send Henderson off.

There’s no getting away from it, Henderson was very lucky indeed. And even the most ardent Palace fans might agree that he will have had little complaints had he been sent for an early bath.

Controversy reins supreme

There was then even more controversy in the capital as City were given a golden chance to equalise from the penalty spot. Bernardo Silva was taken down by Tyrique Mitchell and despite seemingly getting a slight touch on the ball, the referee and VAR awarded a penalty.

Intriguinly, Omar Marmoush was the man to take responsibility. Henderson – who arguably shouldn’t have even been on the pitch – guessed correctly and parried the ball away, also saving from Haaland on the follow-up.

He then also denied a brilliant Doku effort, adding to City’s fury in the process.

Offside flag breaks Palace hearts

Just as they had done in the first half, City dominated possession, but Palace had the clinical edge – or so they thought. From a long Chris Richards throw-in, City failed to clear, with Stefan Ortega required to make a brilliant save.

It fell to the brilliant Munoz, who smashed home from close range to double Palace’s lead. But Ismaila Sarr was stood at least a yard offside, with VAR required to chalk off the strike.

And with that decision, City breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Palace make history as City end trophyless

What a day for Crystal Palace and their supporters. Two finals, two defeats but now they finally have an FA Cup under their belts.

They’ve been exhilarating in the competition this season. And while they had to weather a few storms at Wembley, they fully deserve their place in the sun – and no doubt the celebrations will go on for a long time.

When it comes to City though, it’s the end of a very difficult season – just the second since Pep Guardiola’s arrival that they will go trophyless. They’re now forced to focus on a Champions League place and as it stands, that’s their only sign of success.
