Dad’s simple homemade ‘weed killer recipe’ using three household items

By staff13 May 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

A Reddit user has shared his father’s simple “weed killer recipe” which uses just three household ingredients – and it apparently works in less than a day

Spring is here, and while you’re likely enjoying the sight of flowers blossoming in your garden, the warmer weather and brighter days also signal the arrival of a less welcome guest – weeds. While it’s common to spot weeds sprouting in your lawn or amidst your plants, they can also sneak their way onto patios, driveways and between paving stones.

But fear not, one savvy dad reckons he’s found a straightforward, homemade “weed killer recipe” that uses everyday items and works wonders on driveways and paved areas. Sharing his father’s “weed killer recipe” on a Reddit thread, the user claimed it could zap weeds in “only 24 hours”.

He pointed out that it’s a “much cheaper” alternative to branded weed killers and won’t harm wildlife. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that it might not be the best choice for areas where you want plants to thrive, reports the Express.

The dad’s method involves mixing a gallon of vinegar with a cup of salt and two tablespoons of liquid dish soap. To keep things as natural as possible, opt for an eco-friendly dish soap.

Just combine the three ingredients and decant into a spray bottle, ready to douse the affected spots. After spraying the weed-infested areas, let it soak in. The high concentration of acetic acid in vinegar dehydrates the weed, causing it to shrivel up.

For optimal results, choose a vinegar with a high acetic acid content, ideally between 10 and 20 per cent. Likewise, salt acts to dehydrate the plants and upset the internal water equilibrium of the plant cells.

As it’s water-soluble, it works best when combined with a liquid and applied, making it easier for the weeds to soak up.

Dish soap serves as a binding agent, enabling the vinegar and salt to adhere to the plant leaves. With this mixture, the weed should perish.
