Daniel Levy gives up second powerful role after bombshell Tottenham exit

By staff5 September 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Daniel Levy is one of the most recognisable faces in English football and a powerful voice in the Premier League hierarchy – but he’s now leaving north London giants Tottenham

Daniel Levy has shocked football by quitting Tottenham after 25 years. And it comes as the club hierarchy made it clear they want to go in a different direction because Levy has not delivered enough success on the pitch.

Levy, 63, who stood down from his role as executive chairman, has only won two trophies during a quarter of a century at the helm. That has been deemed not good enough and Levy stood down from his role as executive chairman.

The Lewis family, the club’s majority shareholders, say they want to deliver more trophies for the fans after Levy’s sudden departure. Tottenham have also stressed that Levy’s departure does not indicate a takeover. Instead, director Peter Charrington is taking over as non-executive chairman.

Levy has overseen the club’s new £1billion stadium and state-of-the-art training ground but has been under pressure because his reign has only delivered two trophies in 25 years, including last season’s Europa League. Levy said in a statement: “I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees. We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level.

“More than that, we have built a community. I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years.

“I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”

The move has come as a bolt out of the blue and left Spurs fans genuinely shocked. Levy and his family still own 29.88 per cent of ENIC’s share of the club but he is stepping away less than four months after Tottenham won the Europa League trophy.

Tottenham have built an incredible £1billion stadium during Levy’s tenure and a state-of-the-art training ground but fans have long been divided about his leadership and staged protests calling for him to quit.

Charrington, Non-Executive Chairman, added: “I am very honoured to become Non-Executive Chairman of this extraordinary Club and, on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Daniel and his family for their commitment and loyalty to the Club over so many years.

“This is a new era of leadership for the club, on and off the pitch. I do recognise there has been a lot of change in recent months as we put in place new foundations for the future.

“We are now fully focused on stability and empowering our talented people across the Club, led by Vinai and his executive team.”
