Danny Rohl makes dramatic Sheffield Wednesday U-turn to STAY as boss of crisis club

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has made a dramatic U-turn and will remain as Owls manager. The highly-rated German had been expected to depart Hillsborough amid the ongoing financial crisis engulfing the club.

Rohl had informed Wednesday chiefs of his intention to leave towards the end of the season after players were paid late for March. The same issues has followed in both May and June, with the Owls under three separate embargoes.

The 36-year-old has been linked with both Southampton and Leicester as well as a clutch of jobs in his native Germany. But a move is yet to come to fruition and he will now remain as Wednesday boss, despite missing the first two weeks of pre-season.

It was announced on Monday evening that Henrik Pedersen, Rohl’s assistant, had penned a new deal at Hillsborough and he was expected to take over as manager once Rohl’s exit had been rubber-stamped.

Rohl, who is under contract until the summer of 2027, was negotiating a severance package with the club in order for him to be able to leave with immediate effect.

But he will now remain in what could be the clearest sign yet that takeover talks are progressing at the beleaguered South Yorkshire club.

Fans are demanding under-fire owner Dejphon Chansiri sells up and the Thai tuna magnate knows he is in the end game. Interested parties are being directed to a group who specialise in the sale of football clubs, with NDAs being signed and proper process followed.

Chansiri is already known to have rejected two bids from a Florida-based consortium made of business and professional sportspeople, including Sheffield-born Adam Shaw who has made his money Stateside.

But there is also believed to be interest from numerous other parties, including former Crystal Palace part-owner John Textor and admiring glances from the Middle East.

Rohl will return with his hands tied behind his back, at least until Wednesday settle their debts. They have been banned from paying either transfer or loan fees for the next three windows for non-payment of players.

They are also under embargo for failing to pay the tax man and other clubs regarding historic transfer fees. All three must be settled before they can register any new players on more than £7,000-a-week.

Highly-rated winger Djeidi Gassama is closing in on a move to Rangers for a cut-price fee rumoured to be in the region of £2.5million. Fellow flier Anthony Musaba and attacker Josh Windass are also being linked with moves away.

Manchester City have already poached two of the Owls’ most highly-rated academy stars including 15-year-old Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri, son of ex-Everton favourite Danny.
