Darwin Nunez rubbed salt into the wounds after Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte scored a dramatic winner for Uruguay to inspire a late 3-2 victory over Colombia – with ex-Everton man Yerry Mina in plain view
Liverpool star Darwin Nunez stuck the boot into former Everton defender Yerry Mina by celebrating right in front of him after Manuel Ugarte’s winner for Uruguay against Colombia on Friday night.
Nunez’s side secured a thrilling win as Manchester United midfielder Ugarte struck in the 11th minute of stoppage time to inspire a 3-2 victory over their South American rivals – after Andres Gomez equalised just minutes earlier.
Mina had only come on as a substitute in the closing minutes, but that hadn’t stopped him from clashing with Nunez after a handful of duels amid the tense finish.
And Nunez made sure he rubbed salt into the wounds with Mina in plain view after Ugarte’s dramatic winner – which led to wild scenes from Uruguay players as they celebrated leapfrogging their rivals into second in World Cup qualifying.
Nunez played the full 90 minutes for Uruguay as he continues his momentum after starting and scoring in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend.
He has only started four times under boss Arne Slot in the Premier League this season but has come back into the fray after an injury to forward Diogo Jota.
Nunez will be given a heavy burden of adding to Liverpool’s goals this season to ensure they stay top of the table, having racked up a five point lead over Manchester City.
Last month, Slot hailed Nunez for continuing to work hard despite not getting as much game time as he hoped
“I think about Darwin, I gave him credit for the fact he worked so hard in previous weeks when he didn’t play a lot to be able to play three games in a row.
“I think three games in eight days, so that says a lot about him – but it also says a lot about the quality of our performance staff and medical staff that we were able to give him the right sessions to prepare him in the right way.”
After bagging Liverpool’s winner against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, the Dutchman added: “With him there is, like the others, room for improvement in co-operation with some of the other players, but that’s normal. He’s very good and it’s pleasing to see that after a difficult start.”
