Dave Grohl paid tribute to 30 years of the Foo Fighters with a lengthy letter in which he paid special mention to the band’s late drummer, Taylor Hawkins
Dave Grohl penned an emotional letter to mark the 30th anniversary of the Foo Fighters. The band’s frontman pieced together a six-page letter to make the occasion and paid tribute to late bandmate Taylor Hawkins with his words.
In the letter, Dave wrote: “And… Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever.”
He added: “The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivalled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”
The duo were in the iconic band together, but Taylor sadly died three years ago at the age of 50. He was found dead at the Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogota in Colombia with traces of 10 substances in his body, including heroin, opioids, and benzodiazepines.
At the time, the musician is said to have suffered “chest pains” which sparked a medical emergency, the City Health Department said in a statement at the time. They confirmed that an ambulance had been called to the scene, but a mobile response unit from EMI was already at the scene, with a health professional dealing with the emergency.
While attempts had been made to revive Hawkins, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Taylor is survived by his wife of 17 years, Alison, and their three children, Taylor’s 18-year-old son Shane has also followed in his dad’s drumming footsteps.
Elsewhere in Dave’s tribute he also gave a special mention to drummer Josh Freese. In May, Josh left the band in May after spending three years with them following Taylor’s death.
Dave wrote: “It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete.
“So we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”
In a statement revealing Josh had been sacked from his position, the drummer said he supported the decision. He took to social media to share his thoughts on the call. “The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a different direction with their drummer,” he said.
“Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band.”
He added: “In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry – just a bit shocked and disappointed.” However, it seems that Josh is trying to see the funny side of the situation as he said: “But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine. Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.'”
