David Beckham finally gets ‘humbling honour’ after leaked emails and angry six-word blast

David Beckham has opened up on the honour of receiving a knighthood, which has been years in the making, as the Manchester United icon previously lamented his snub

David Beckham has said receiving a knighthood is a “truly humbling honour” as the England football icon’s efforts are recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours list. The 50-year-old will become a Sir after decades as one of the country’s most loved figures.

Beckham came through the ranks at Manchester United but harked back to his upbringing in London, where patriotism was a huge pillar within his family. He would captain the Three Lions later in his career, which saw him enjoy some iconic moments.

Post-retirement he has remained one of Britain’s most recognisable individuals and has spearheaded several campaigns around the globe. After years of waiting King Charles has now bestowed the honour upon Beckham, who didn’t shy away from expressing his pride.

He said in a statement: “Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.

“Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.

“I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”

Beckham was awarded the honour for services to sport and to charity. His former club were among those to share in his joy as they said: “Sir David Beckham. Massive congratulations from everyone at United on this special achievement Becks – you truly deserve this.”

It was reported last week that Beckham was in line for a knighthood. He has grown close with the King and comments appeared to suggest his new title was imminent. The 50-year-old famously stood for hours in a public line to pay his respects to the late Queen despite having offers to be fast tracked.

He had also championed charities like children’s charity UNICEF and fronted the London Olympics bid. Beckham however has previously voiced his frustration, albeit privately, at not getting the honour. Back in 2017, a series of emails were leaked which allegedly showed Beckham voicing his anger at being overlooked in 2013. He is said to have slammed the honours committee and criticised their decision to award opera singer Katherine Jenkins and OBE.

“Katherine Jenkins OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops,” he allegedly wrote. Beckham was also involved in some controversy after signing up as a brand ambassador the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, despite the country’s dreadful human rights record.

Beckham, who was honoured with an OBE in 2003, had previously claimed: “I don’t care about being knighted.”
