David Moyes confirms Everton talks with PGMOL over Man Utd penalty controversy

By staff25 February 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Everton boss David Moyes was left furious after his side had a late penalty chalked off in the weekend draw with Manchester United and he has since been in touch with referee bosses since the call

Everton boss David Moyes has held talks with the PGMOL but has been forced to ‘move on’ from the Manchester United penalty controversy.

The Toffees thought they had the chance to beat United at the weekend as they were awarded a spot-kick by Andy Madley. Ashley Young appeared to have been brought down by Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt.

But after being sent to the review area by the VAR, Madley reversed his decision, ensuring a share of the points. That decision did not go down well with Moyes, who expressed his disgust after the full-time whistle.

A statement from the Premier League read: “VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”

Ruben Amorim told to make historic move for Liverpool flop to give Man Utd ‘swagger’

Ruben Amorim hints he agrees with Alan Shearer after calling out ‘pathetic’ Man Utd stars

And with Everton now preparing for their next game against Brentford, Moyes has revealed that he has held discussions with referees’ bosses, the PGMOL. He said: “I still feel the exact way I did at the time – I thought it was a penalty kick and I was a little bit surprised he went to VAR. And when I saw it in the changing room afterwards, I was really surprised.

“Obviously we’ve been in touch to check it out, and we’ve spoken to the PGMOL. It’s the past now and there’s nothing we can do about it, but we were disappointed we didn’t get the decision.”

Asked what the PGMOL said, Moyes replied: “It’s mainly the secretary who has spoken to them, and he’s been feeding bits back to me, but to be honest, once we didn’t get it, I’ve had to move on, and find a way of hopefully getting some decisions as we go along. We just didn’t get it on the day and that was it.”

Away from Moyes’ fury, there was unsurprisingly a different response from the United camp. Speaking after the final whistle, both Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes insisted that it was not a penalty.

The draw ended up keeping the Red Devils 15th in the Premier League despite their fightback. They had fallen 2-0 down against Everton ahead of goals from Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte. Amorim will be aiming to get the side back to winning ways on Wednesday night as they take on struggling Ipswich at Old Trafford.
