Drinking coffee can lead to teeth becoming stained, but there is one easy way to keep them looking white – and it doesn’t cost a penny. So have you tried this trick?
From puffing on cigarettes to sipping on red wine, there are countless daily habits that can lead to unsightly tooth discolouration. While there are methods to fix the issues, such as 95p teeth whitening strips, avoiding the staining is better than trying to remove it.
One of the biggest culprits, as many will know, is coffee. However, for many, giving up their morning cuppa – even in the pursuit of a dazzling white smile – is a non-starter. Thankfully, a London-based dentist has revealed his “easy and cheap” trick to maintain pearly whites, despite being a regular black coffee drinker.
Dr Onkar Mudhar, who enjoys two to three cups of black coffee daily, often gets asked how he manages to “keep his teeth so white” while “always drinking black coffee”. It’s well-known that coffee can stain teeth due to its tannin content – a type of polyphenol that breaks down in water, causing colour compounds to adhere to your teeth and potentially leave them with a yellowish tint.
In a recent TikTok video, Dr Onkar shared his simple secret: “Easiest and cheapest way that I will say I keep my teeth white. I don’t use a straw when I drink hot drinks, I think that’s weird. I rinse out after with water. It really is the most tried and tested simple method.”
He suggested taking a “sip of water in your mouth” and “swishing it around your teeth”.
Afterwards, you can either simply swallow the water, or if you spit it out into a white sink you’ll “see that the water is actually dark”.
Breaking down the reason behind this, he explained: “That’s because the tannins stick to your teeth. That last bit of tannins is what sticks to your teeth, especially in the gaps in-between.”
Dr Onkar also mentioned his “darker skin tone” and dark beard help make his white teeth appear more prominent.
However, there are additional methods for ensuring your teeth look their absolute best – such as visiting your dentist or hygienist for regular professional care.

He went on: “Or airflow [tooth polishing], or professional teeth whitening, or using tooth whitening toothpaste that are designed by dentists, and there’s only one on the market and it’s the Enlighten Serum. The Duo pack especially. That is a great product.”
