Police have issued a major update after a customer was fatally stabbed inside a branch of Lloyds Bank in Derby.

The customer was stabbed inside the bank in St Peter’s Street at about 2.35pm today. Derbyshire police said the man, aged in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. While formal identification has not taken place, his family have been made aware. In a major update, police confirmed a man in his 40s was arrested inside a property in Western Road, Normanton, at about 6pm on suspicion of murder. Another man, aged in his 30s, was also apprehended at the same property on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both men remain in police custody.

A significant police presence remains in the city centre and will do for some time, police said. Detective Inspector Tony Owen, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, who is leading the investigation, said: “We appreciate that this incident will have caused significant concern to the local community and we’d like to thank them for their patience and understanding.

No-one else was hurt and while the investigation is at an early stage, at this time we are treating it as an isolated incident. Officers will be in the area for some time so we’d encourage anyone with any concerns to please speak to us. We’d also encourage anyone with any information on this incident to please contact us as a matter of urgency.”

Following the stabbing, an air ambulance was seen landing close to Derby Cathedral after officers were alerted to reports of an attack. Members of the public were asked to avoid the area this evening.

Despite this, people were seen hanging around the scene on Peter’s Street. The incident also sparked travel chaos in and out of Derby. The AA’s live traffic map showed delays around the centre of the city around rush hour.

Mirror affiliate DerbyshireLive said Lloyds Bank shared a statement about the incident: “We are deeply saddened by the incident at our Derby branch and our thoughts are with those affected. We are supporting our colleagues during this difficult time and will co-operate closely with the police.”
