Dermatologist says not washing two things is making hair get greasy quicker

By staff23 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Some people find they may rarely need to wash their hair, but others may become frustrated if their tresses become greasy shortly after washing. Luckily, there may be an easy fix

There is nothing more frustrating than waking up ready for the day and noticing your hair looks greasy. Much like our skin, our scalp sheds dead skin cells, produces sebum (oil) and collects sweat, dirt and dust, so regular washing is important. However, some people find that even after a good hair wash and scalp scrub, their hair quickly ends up looking limp and oily once more.

People with fine hair are more likely to get greasy hair faster. That’s because fine hair has a smaller surface area to absorb the oils produced by the scalp, causing them to accumulate more quickly, says Odele Beauty. Recently, one woman shared her frustration online in a video showing her hair just one day after washing it, displaying her now-greasy locks.

Now, a board-certified dermatologist has shared their top tips to prevent it from becoming greasy.

The skin expert, known as Derm Guru online, boasting 1.6million followers on TikTok has shared her dermatologist-approved hacks for oily hair. She said: “If this is what your scalp looks like, even after shampooing, I’m a board-certified dermatologist. These are the oily hacks I swear by.”

She said firstly, if you are “hair training” to “stop that right now”. This is a practice that many people use when they reduce the frequency of their hair washes in the hope of training the scalp to produce less oil over time.

“You cannot just manifest less hair oil production…you need to wash it every day for it to be less greasy,” Derm Guru said. She noted that your hair oil production is genetic.

Derm Guru also said that “nobody thinks about this” but we should all be cleaning our hairbrushes. She notes that dead skin cells can build up in your brush, and when you go to brush your hair with a dirty brush or comb, you are redepositing the oil back into your scalp.

Another must is to wash your “nasty” pillowcases, insists the skin expert. She said: “If you have oily hair, you should be washing your pillowcases at least weekly, if not every two to three days.”

She also observes that a lot of people are using dry shampoo in the wrong way. She insists the product should be applied at bedtime and on a clean, dry scalp. She said dry shampoo “ain’t gonna do Jack” if you only use it when your hair is greasy.

She advises cleaning and exfoliating your scalp with glycolic acid and insists you should be using a hair dryer – and not let your hair dry naturally. Derm Guru notes that a hair dryer can help absorb some of the oil in your hair and help it appear less greasy.
