A major search is underway after two teen schoolgirls went missing after visiting a leisure centre. The two girls, Sofia, 13, and Carla, 14, were last seen wearing their school uniform at the Abraham Moss library and leisure centre in Crumpsall at 4.45pm Thursday.

Police have issued a public appeal, asking anyone with information about the youngsters to get in touch as a matter of urgency. Officers say the pair are known to visit Piccadilly Gardens and The Printworks in Manchester city centre. Sofia is described as white, slim, with long dark hair and is said to wear glasses. When she went missing, she was wearing her uniform from St Monica’s High School – a PE polo top, black shorts, and black shoes, according to Greater Manchester Police.

Carla, 14, is Black, around 5ft 4in tall, with long hair in braids. She was last seen wearing her St Monica’s School green blazer, black puffer coat and black school shoes.

In a bulletin published by GMP about the missing duo, the force said: “Sofia and Carla are thought to be together and are known to frequent Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester and around the Printworks area.

“Officers are becoming increasingly concerned about the welfare of Sofia and Carla and want to ensure sure they are safe and well.”

The latest bulletin came after two other schoolgirls were reported missing earlier this week – this time from the Kirklees area in West Yorkshire.

The youngsters – Amy-Leigh Heward and Hannah Tofik – both 15, hand’t been seen since they were reported missing on Monday. Neither of the teens had been at school or home, and there were no reported sightings to date.

West Yorkshire Police appealed for the public’s help to locate them and have issued a detailed description of the girls and what they were last seen wearing.

DEMAND ACTION FOR MISSING PEOPLE

Too many missing people are falling through the cracks – harmed while away, and ignored when they return.

We need a proper government strategy led by the Home Office, Education, and Health departments to stop this crisis.

Right now, there’s no real support. People go missing again and again – yet no one’s asking why.

We’re calling for:

  • A new national strategy for missing children and adults
  • Proper support for missing people when they return
  • Investment to stop people going missing in the first place

At 10,000 signatures, the government has to respond. At 100,000, it will be debated in Parliament. That’s our goal – real action.

Amy-Leigh was described as white, 5ft 8 with brown/red straight should length hair. She was last seen wearing grey jeans, a cream zip-up jacket and white Nike trainers.

Hannah is described as white, 5ft 6 and of slim build with blonde/brown hair. She was last seen in the Dewsbury area wearing a black Adidas jacket with stripes on the arms, white crop top, black leggings and white trainers, and carrying a Nike rucksack.

A police statement reads: “Police are appealing for information to help locate two teenage girls who have been reported missing from the Kirklees area.

“Amy-Leigh Heward, 15, and Hannah Tofik, 15, were reported missing on Sunday evening.

“It is thought they may have travelled to the North Yorkshire area.

FAMILIES OF THE MISSING

Missing people: Facts and Myths

Every year, 170,000 people vanish in the UK – that’s one person every 90 seconds. Fortunately, most return home within a few days, often without the need for a public appeal.

For adults over 18, going missing isn’t illegal, but the police will want to ensure their safety. If there are concerns for their welfare, a public appeal might be launched. Importantly, you don’t need to wait 24 hours to report someone missing. If their absence is unusual, contact the police immediately. Any child who goes missing will be looked for by police though they are not often given public facing appeals.

How the Missing People charity Supports Families

Missing People works closely with the police to amplify missing appeals and provide vital support to families. They offer practical help in searches and emotional support to those affected. If you need assistance or want to see your loved one’s appeal on the Missed map, call their Helpline on 116 000. It’s free, confidential and non-judgemental. They are also there to listen if you are thinking of disappearing or have already left.

The Role of Public Appeals

Not all missing cases are made public. In situations involving domestic abuse or severe mental health issues, publicity might do more harm than good. That is one reason why you will only see a fraction of missing cases on the Missed map.

When sharing appeals, it’s crucial to use the official channels from the Missing People website or via the share button on the Missed map. This ensures that once the person is found, all traces of the appeal are removed, respecting their privacy. The Mirror is committed to removing digital footprints of shared appeals, ensuring the missing person’s right to be forgotten is upheld.

By sharing official appeals, you help protect the privacy and dignity of those who have been found.

“Officers are asking anyone with any information about their whereabouts to please contact them quoting log 1929 of June 1.

“You can contact West Yorkshire Police online at https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/LiveChat or by calling 101.”
