Many people in the UK are thought to have diabetes without realising it
Almost 4.6 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes, yet it’s estimated that over a million more may be unknowingly living with the condition. This information is provided by Diabetes UK, which also states that approximately 90% of those diagnosed have type 2 diabetes, a largely preventable form of the disease.
Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health issues such as heart disease or stroke. Moreover, high blood sugar levels, a precursor to diabetes, can inflict long-term damage on various body parts including eyes, nerves, kidneys, and blood vessels if sustained over time.
The NHS points out that not everyone with type 2 diabetes will experience symptoms, but common signs for those who do include unintended weight loss, constant thirst, frequent urination, and extreme fatigue. Other indicators are slow-healing cuts or wounds, genital itching, and blurry vision.

There are some less obvious symptoms too, particularly affecting the mouth. Healthline reports that one might notice “fruity” smelling breath, a result of the body breaking down fat cells for energy when it can’t use insulin properly, leading to the production of ketones.
This can give your breath a fruity odour or a strong chemical smell. Additionally, diabetes can cause dry mouth due to high blood sugar reducing saliva flow.
Symptoms frequently coincide between the two forms of diabetes, yet type 1 “usually develops more quickly and is more common in younger people”, according to NHS advice. Should you suspect that you or your child might have type 2 diabetes, it’s important to consult a GP.
