Diego Simeone reveals what sparked furious row with Liverpool fans during game

By staff18 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The latest Liverpool news as the Atletico Madrid boss was shown a red card after clashing with home supporters following Virgil van Dijk’s injury time winner for Liverpool.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has responded to his clash with Liverpool supporters in the aftermath of Virgil van Dijk’s stoppage time winner. The Reds’ captain scored from a corner in added time to secure a dramatic 3-2 win in the first Champions League clash of the season.

The incident led to Simeone being shown a red card by the referee and having to watch the remaining minutes of the match from the stands. The Atletico boss has now given his side in his post-match press conference.

Liverpool had a dream start to the game at Anfield with goals from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah giving them a 2-0 lead after just six minutes. Atletico though halved the deficit just before the half time whistle through Marcos Llorente, although there were some claims of offside for the goal.

Diego Simeone SENT OFF after fracas with Liverpool fans following late Virgil van Dijk goal

Liverpool put on late show as three stars score 8/10 in dramatic Atletico Madrid win

Atletico completed their comeback with nine minutes left to play, when Llorente got his second of the game. But the drama wasn’t over there, with Van Dijk finding the net in the 92nd minute.

That sparked the reaction from Simeone. In his post-match press conference, he called on there to be ‘consequences’ for the fan involved.

“They always talk about taking care of each other, but they insult you throughout the entire match and you can’t say anything because you’re the manager,” he said.

“My reaction was unjustifiable, but do you know what it’s like to be insulted for 90 minutes, to turn around after the opponent scores and still be insulted? It’s not that easy.

“(The referee told me) he understood me. I hope Liverpool can improve that aspect and that when they identify the person who did that, there will be consequences.

“There were insults throughout the match, including gestures. It’s clear that I’m the one who has to stay calm, I have to put up with the insults, the gestures and any situation. Because I’m in a position where I have to put up with it.

“I’m not really going to get into the exact nature of the insults. I don’t want to get involved in that. I have got to stay in my place, I know what went on behind the manager’s bench. I can’t solve society’s problem in one press conference. I have to live with it as it exists all over the place all of the time.”
