Disney World is mourning the death of its beloved Gino the gorilla, who was a member of the park since the first day it opened.

The theme park announced the sad passing of the 44-year-old primate, who was an endangered western lowland gorilla and the oldest in Animal Kingdom, on Wednesday.

In a touching Facebook post, from Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, they wrote: “We are heartbroken to share the passing of Gino, our beloved 44-year-old western lowland gorilla.

“For nearly 30 years, Gino touched countless lives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with his playful spirit, gentle humor, and steady presence as a devoted father and troop leader.”

They continued: “Gino leaves behind an incredible legacy – 14 offspring, global contributions to gorilla care and conservation, and the lasting memories of every cast member and guest he inspired.

“Though he would have turned 45 this December, Gino’s story will live on in the future of his species and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Thank you, Gino. You will always be part of our family.”

Animal Kingdom opened in Orlando, Florida, on 22 April 1998, and Gino became a standout for families visiting, and would reportedly beat his chest on a regular basis.

After the sad news of his death, tributes flooded in for the endangered gorilla, with many noting fond memories.

One wrote under the post on Facebook: “We have very fond memories of Gino from our many visits to AK. Thinking of all those Cast Members who have cared for him and loved him throughout his life.”

A second penned: “Knew Gino very well when he was at Lincoln Park Zoo. The first time I visited him at DAK the keepers were kind enough to let a fellow keeper greet him in holding…and he purred at me. His daughter Tabibu was one of my besties. RIP old friend.”

“44 is amazing!! Their life expectancy in the wild is only 34-40 years you guys gave him an amazing life,” a third commented.

A fourth added: “Gino was amazing. He was truly a beautiful animal, and we enjoyed watching him when we came to Animal Kingdom. We have special memories of him there.”
