Dr Karan Raj has issued a warning to anyone who might be tempted to eat the non-mouldy part of their loaf of bread despite finding a partially green slice among the loaf
After a long grocery haul and enduring the seemingly endless queues – it’s unlikely anything would drag you back to the supermarket before the week is out.
Even discovering a mouldy slice in your fresh loaf of bread might not be enough to prompt a return trip. You’d probably just chuck the green-tinged slice and continue eating through the rest of the loaf as the week progresses.
However, Dr Karan Raj has issued a stark warning on his TikTok account, stating that “there is no such thing as the clean part of mouldy bread”. Alarmingly, what appears to be “harmless” mould could potentially be “lethal”.
The visible mould is merely “the crown jewels” of a larger issue, according to the doctor. The reproductive parts of mould, known as sporangium, release thousands of spores that spread everywhere.
In the video, Dr Raj warns: “And if you’re seeing these, then you are definitely not seeing the hidden roots.” This implies that simply discarding one mouldy slice won’t render the rest of the loaf safe for consumption, reports the Express.
To stay on the safe side, the doctor advises bidding farewell to the entire loaf. While some types of mould are edible – like those found in blue cheese and antibiotics – others could pose a serious health risk.
Dr Raj warned: “There are thousands of different types of mould. Some probably harmless, some not so good like Rhizopus stolonifer.”
He went on to explain that Rhizopus stolonifer is the type of mould often spotted in food items such as bread. “It is almost impossible to tell whether a mould is harmless or not simply by looking at it, because some of them can produce pretty naughty mycotoxins that can be lethal,” he remarked.
Dr Raj pointed out that even toasting your bread won’t neutralize these dangerous mycotoxins. “So, just throw the whole damn mouldy thing away, please,” he urged.
