Mum Dilber died after suffering in agonising pain for weeks after the procedure in Austria and made two emergency visits to hospital but was sent home, according to her husband
A husband is suing health chiefs after claiming doctors left his wife to suffer in agonising pain before her death following a lip filler procedure.
The 28-year-old mum, named as Dilber, in court papers died after suffering for two weeks, her distraught partner told Austria’s Palace of Justice in Vienna, on February 3. Sobbing at times unconsolably, he told judges: “Her condition worsened day by day. She had no strength at all and could no longer even go to the toilet alone.”
Two weeks after the procedure in October 2023, Dilber died following two emergency visits to hospital with excruciating headaches, her husband’s lawyer Sascha Flatz told the court. Medics at the Donaustadt Clinic in Vienna repeatedly sent her home before admitting her as a patient but days later she was dead, he said.
Her 36-year-old husband, name not disclosed, said: “It was always the same. Blood collection, scanning and then she was sent home.” One neurologist witness told the court: “She complained about radiant pain in the face, especially when chewing.”
Post mortem examinations found Dilber had died from an acute auto-immune reaction probably triggered by a response to the filler op, judges heard. Attorney Flatz said: “My client is convinced that if his wife had been admitted to hospital in good time it would have been possible to save her life.”
The Vienna Health Association, which runs Donaustadt Clinic, denies any wrongdoing. Judges had adjourned the case for further clarification whether earlier medical intervention could have saved Dilber.
The case continues.
According to the US-based Cleveland Clinic, there are some risks people should consider if they decide to get lip fillers. These include:
- Bleeding and pain at the injection sites
- Cold sore reactivation
- Discoloration or tenderness
- Infection
- Tissue death (vascular compromise), which can occur if lip filler is injected into or around an artery
- Your lips may be of different sizes (asymmetry)
- The lip filler may bleed into other areas of your face, usually toward the nose (migration)
It added that lip fillers can be safe when performed by an experienced healthcare provider, including a plastic surgeon, dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. The Cleveland Clinic did say, however, people “shouldn’t get lip fillers from a beauty salon or spa.”
