The doctor has asked why people would ‘take the risk’
Dr Mark Hyman, a renowned medical expert and educator, has issued a stark warning to tea drinkers. The doctor and public speaker regularly shares health advice with his millions of followers on social media.
And in a recent post, he shared that “a recent study found that teabags release approximately 11.6 billion microplastic in a single cup of tea”. He warned that these plastics are not just an environmental issue, but could also be impacting your health.
Part of Dr Hyman’s post reads: “Your cup of tea should nourish you, not expose you to plastic pollution. The cumulative effects of daily exposure to microplastics is still unfolding, but why take the risk? ” Instead, he suggests tea lovers “use an organic loose leaf tea and steep it” using a stainless steel or glass strainer.
For those who prefer the convenience of tea bags, he recommends choosing ones that are free from harmful substances such as bisphenol-A (BPA), phthalates, polypropylene, and epichlorohydrin. He suggests looking for tea bags made from organic hemp, cotton, or plant fibres instead.
Part of his update continues: “Look for tea bags made from organic hemp, cotton, or plant fibres instead. Tea can be an incredible source of antioxidants in your life, but just like food-quality matters.”
