A video has captured the heartbreaking moment a rescue dog, who has spent years waiting for his forever home, rested his head in his rescuer’s hand as he remains in kennels
A heart-wrenching clip from a rescue centre shows Ice, a dog still awaiting adoption, affectionately resting his head on the hand of his carer.
In the UK, numerous shelters are reaching full capacity as countless dogs need new homes.
Some rescue groups even work to re-home strays from overseas, providing prospective pet owners with a plethora of choices. Despite this, people often gravitate towards puppies when considering the significant commitment of adding a canine to their household, leaving many older dogs in kennels for long periods before finding their permanent family.
One “gentle” pooch, Ice, a mixed breed rescued from a Romanian public shelter by Oakwood Dog Rescue, is waiting to be chosen. A truly endearing video posted on Facebook shows him softly laying his head into a rescuer’s hand while receiving face strokes.
Ice, approximately five-years-old, is described as large with a cream coat and a “gentle but playful” nature.
Oakwood Dog Rescue shared details of Ice’s arrival on his profile, commenting: “He arrived wagging his tail and enjoying lots of fusses. He has been nothing but a gentleman since he has been with us.”
They accompanied the affecting video with the message, saying: “Our gentle giant Ice enjoying some chin strokes. He hopes that one day he’ll be able to get an infinite amount of strokes in his forever home.”
The comments section was brimming with affection for Ice, a dog in need of a forever home. One person gushed: “Aww he makes my heart melt – wish I was in a position for him. He’s soo handsome and cute.”
Another hopeful comment read: “He’s beautiful hope he finds his forever home soon”, while someone else expressed their support: “Omg he’s gorgeous but I’ve got 3 rescues already! ! Shared with hope”.
Further praise came with remarks like: “What a beautiful boy” and “Such a beautiful dog”.
Ice is on the lookout for a loving family. Suitable to live with children over 14 due to his lively nature, Ice has yet to experience life in a proper home and will require some training.
At the rescue centre, he’s shown a friendly disposition towards other dogs, behaving “gentle but playful with all”. His compatibility with cats remains untested.

Training is crucial, and not every dog is a good match for first-time owners.
If you’re ready for the responsibility and have considered the significant time, effort, care, and consistency needed, rescuing a dog can be an incredibly fulfilling experience.
