Asked in the Oval Office if he would characterise Vladimir Putin as a ‘dictator’, Donald Trump said: ‘I don’t use those words lightly’ – despite branding President Volodymyr Zelensky the same
Donald Trump has refused to label Vladimir Putin a dictator, despite having previously used the word to describe Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Asked in the Oval Office if he would characterise Putin as a “dictator”, Trump said: “I don’t use those words lightly, we’ll see how it all works out.” He added there is a “chance of a very good settlement” between Ukraine and Russia, and that an unresolved war between the two countries “could lead to World War Three”.
The US President made the comment during talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Macron said the pair had planned to discuss “long-lasting peace” in Ukraine today after a productive discussion during a G7 call this morning.
Europe is willing to “step up” on defence, he adds, but “strong” US involvement will be needed to secure peace in Ukraine.
