Donald Trump invited 18-year-old Barron – now easily the tallest member of the family – to wave to the crowd during the inauguration ceremony in Washington DC on Monday
This is the moment Donald Trump introduced his boy Barron to crowds at his inauguration – by saying: “I have a very tall son”.
The audience cheered and clapped as Barron, 18, stood and waved in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington DC, the alternate venue for Trump to be sworn for a second term as president.
Barron appeared to revel in the attention, waving and – so often like his dad – punching the air with a raised right fist. The teenager even held his right hand to his right ear, listening intently to the rapturous noise.
Trump had said: “I have a very tall son named Barron, has anyone ever heard of him?” The world leader had introduced his close family, as his five children were at the ceremony. Former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George Bush Jr were among the attendees on Monday.
Barron, born in Manhattan, New York City on March 20, 2006, only made rare appearances during the 2016 election but has been seen more frequently this time round. The student is bilingual, speaking both English and Slovene, his mother’s native language and is said to be particularly “good with computers”.
His 78-year-old father will sign pardons for the January 6 insurrectionists on his first day in office, he said at the rally in Washington DC. The US President is expected to pardon hundreds of people prosecuted for their involvement in the violent insurrection at the US Capitol Building four years ago.
It’s unclear whether he’ll pardon all 1,600 people prosecuted or imprisoned over the attempted coup, or just the 900 or so that were charged with non-violent misdemeanour offences like trespass. He said he’d be signing pardons for “a lot of people” and he would be freeing “the J6 Hostages today.”
From the start, Trump’s speech tracked his campaign rally approach: big promises of national success due to his leadership, with plenty of sweeping indictments of the status quo.
He said: “The golden age of America begins right now… Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced,” he continued. “Our top priority will be to create a nation that is proud, prosperous and free. We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad.”
