The Irishman made a name for himself for the way he behaved during Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight showdown with Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium
Conor McGregor has been slammed for his behaviour during Anthony Joshua’s KO defeat by Daniel Dubois.
The former two-division UFC champion was ringside for the heavyweight clash at Wembley Stadium. Dubois was a huge underdog coming into the contest with the former heavyweight world champion, but sensationally dropped Joshua three times before securing a fifth round knockout win in front of 96,000 fans.
McGregor had front-row seats for the blockbuster fight. As ever, the Irishman made a name for himself as he was seen strutting into the stadium with an unlit cigar sticking out of his mouth, as well as jumping out of his seat multiple times during Dubois’ stunning win to retain his IBF heavyweight title. While many would argue that the 36-year-old was being a passionate fan, there were a fair few who disagreed with his antics over the weekend.
Analysing his behaviour during a recent episode of their Believe You Me podcast, UFC legend Michael Bisping and former light-heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith were eager to have their say on the topic of McGregor. “Conor, you would have thought that he was a big Daniel Dubois fan because when Joshua was getting those [punches], he was out of his seat,” Bisping said. “Maybe the cigar might have even got lit. Walking in with a big cigar, unlit, between the teeth. How do we feel about that? Because two words spring to mind right now: Douche. Bag.”
As for Smith, ‘Lionheart’ prevented himself from totally ripping into McGregor. However, he did question some of the Irishman’s choices when it comes to presenting himself in public. “I don’t know what happens to people or when you change or how much money you have to have to start doing weird, douchey s**t like that,” Smith said. “Like, how rich do you have to be to wear your sunglasses inside 24/7. For what? I wish I was five percent as cool as he thinks he is. Like, how do you get to be so cool? I don’t know, I don’t get it. And I don’t want to just talk s**t on Conor, but come on, bro. Come on.”
McGregor hasn’t fought since suffering a brutal injury, breaking his leg in the trilogy showdown with bitter rival Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. The Irishman was set to fight Michael Chandler in June at UFC 303, but was forced to pull out of the contest due to an injury, with his return to the cage now being put back until the new year.
The Irishman recently took to social media to share his negative drugs tests result and issued a yet another plea to the UFC as he eyes a return to the cage. He admitted recently that he may not commit his future to the MMA promotion after the final two fights of his contract. “I don’t know. I don’t think anyone knows. What happens afterwards, as I’m a free agent, I’m not sure,” he said.
