Drivers over-70 drivers must ‘surrender’ licence due to six specific errors

Drivers over the age of 70 have been told to ‘surrender’ their driving licence if they’ve had six types of accidents – as they may be at risk of losing their licences

Drivers over 70 are being urged to “surrender” their licences if they experience any of six specific issues. Tell-tale signs such as minor scrapes, dents, damage to walls or fences, flattened flowerbeds and broken lights have been highlighted as red flags for older motorists.

Homecare warned: “Small scrapes and dents are appearing on their vehicle. There is damage to the wall or fence by their driveway, or flattened flowerbeds. One of their lights is smashed. They are reluctant to talk about how damage happened or hadn’t noticed it.” Upon reaching 70, drivers must renew their licence, which then requires renewal every three years.

The renewal process includes declaring any medical conditions and confirming eyesight standards for driving, with honesty being paramount.

Failing to declare a condition that affects driving ability is a serious offence, carrying fines up to £1,000 and potential prosecution in the event of an accident.

It’s highly recommended for individuals to undergo a medical check-up before renewing their licence at 70 and with each subsequent renewal, reports Birmingham Live.

Upon receiving your new driving licence, it’s crucial to scrutinise the details meticulously. For instance, if the code 01 is displayed on the reverse of your photocard licence, you’ll be required to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses whilst driving.

Ensure you thoroughly read any accompanying letter or leaflet that comes with your licence.

It might state that you can carry on driving as usual, or it could indicate that you’ve been issued a temporary driving licence solely for use during a Mobility Centre driving assessment.

Remember to discard your expired licence and securely store the new one.
