Dunelm shoppers have been flocking to buy its £28 thermal curtains which help block out light whilst also keeping the heat in and come in a choice of nine colours
With the winter chill sticking around for a while yet, we’re still trying to find clever ways that’ll help keep our heating bills down whilst also keeping us warm. That’s why Dunelm shoppers have been racing to snap up the Solar Blackout Eyelet Curtains that have been hailed for how warm they keep a room.
The thermal curtains help to regulate your room temperature, which means they’ll trap the heat in during the winter, and keep the heat out during the summer so they’re ideal for all year round use. They also have a blackout coating, which helps block out external light as well as minimising noise, making them perfect for bedrooms and living rooms.

You’ll get two curtain panels included in the set, and you can choose from a vast range of lengths and widths to fit any window. Prices start at £28 for a 117cm wide by 137cm long set, with sizes reaching up to 228cm by 228cm, which will set you back £68.
The curtains have a classic eyelet header that makes them easy to thread onto all curtain poles, and they have a matte finish. You can also choose from nine different colours, including neutrals like white and grey, or bolder shades like yellow and purple.
Dunelm shoppers have also been singing their praises, granting them a 4.4 star rating. “Great curtains, keep light out and heat in. Good quality, just take some time for creases to fall out,” wrote one, whilst another added: “Excellent quality curtains – keep the bedroom warm and dark.”
A third agreed: “I was hesitant at first as other reviews mentioned the backing was stiff and that the curtains didn’t hang neatly. However, after unpacking and leaving the curtains laid flat on a bed for a day they hang very neatly and don’t really need ironing.”
They continued: “The blackout lining is very effective! Our house gets the sun straight through from front to back, so we’ve always struggled with having too much light. These curtains can make it almost completely dark even when the sun is shining straight on them. The only caveat is that if you buy larger panels so that they stay a bit bunched when drawn then light can seep in above and below where the folds are furthest from the wall. I can’t comment on the thermal properties much, other than to say that it does feel slightly warmer since hanging these curtains.”
Some did find the material slightly troublesome, writing: “These are a nice light grey colour and block the light. The downside is that they do not hang very well, they splay out at the bottom when pulled back. They did not have too many creases and these have relaxed over the time they have been hanging.”
Another agreed: “Bought online. Colour not as bright in real life. I have found that all these black out curtains never hang as well as ‘normal’ curtains or the advertised photos. They tend to spring out and never hang straight. I think maybe they need weights at the bottom.”
Elsewhere, Amazon has the John Aird Thermal Energy Saving Blackout Tape Top Curtains which start at £14.99 and come in an impressive 16 different colours and various lengths. You’ll also get a co-ordinating tie back with each set, so you can keep them looking neat and tidy.
For a more high end finish, Marks and Spencer’s Velvet Pencil Pleat Thermal Curtains are priced between £59 and £139 and come in a choice of 14 different colours. You can also select different sizes, and pick between four different styles including pencil pleats and ultra-thermal.
