Shoppers at QD Stores in Wisbech were stunned when they spotted Easter eggs on the shelves in the store under a security lockdown with large anti-theft tags attached
Easter eggs costing less than a fiver have been spotted in security crackdown in an attempt to thwart shoplifters who have been eyeing up the tasty treats.
The Easter eggs, costing just £4.49 were seen with security tags on them on the shelves. Shopper Jake Game made the unusual find while shopping at QD Stores in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. When he spotted the locked up eggs, Jake couldn’t believe his eyes. It comes as stores across the country are tightening up security as they battle brazen thieves who appear to have developed a sweet tooth and have turned their attention to chocolate.

Now QD Stores is trying to stop thieves from getting their hands on the chocolate treats this Easter. Cadbury and Nestle eggs can be seen strapped up in the shop with a huge tag on them.
Branded items included Mini Eggs, Smarties, Celebrations, Yorkie, Maltester and the Easter classic, the Creme Egg. Jake joked: “When you’re out in Wisbech and find they security tag their Easter eggs.”
Jake, 25, said: “I just thought it was absolutely hilarious. They’ve gone to the extent of security tagging the Easter eggs. I have no idea why they tagged them.”
It comes after another shopper was left confused after a 1kg back of Mini Eggs costing £19 was seen locked up. That tasty treat had a huge security tag strapped across it. Those particular eggs were spoptted locked up in a WHSmith store on John Street in Liverpool.
Meanwhile shoppers in Tesco were left raging after spotting the price tag on some Easter eggs. One of the popular chocolatey treats this year comes in the form of a giant Kinder egg, a child’s dream. But, it comes with a hefty price tag of £22.
Customers have pinned the costly treats on “greedflation”, claiming certain products are only affordable for the rich, which has left a not-so-sweet taste in some people’s mouths. Glenn Kennedy runs a social media group where he regularly shares some of the best and worst supermarket deals.
He visited Tesco on March 12 where he noticed the prices. Taking to Facebook, Glenn, who lives in Llandudno, shared shelves filled with Kinder Easter eggs, which are for sale at £22 a pop. The price has enraged shoppers online, who say this is “’Greedflation’ at its best”.
One person even went so far as to say supermarkets are treating their customers “like idiots”. The Easter eggs were found at a Tesco branch in Glenn’s hometown. A customer named Jackie said: “Are they having a laugh? It’s chocolate. I’d rather spend the £22 on something else.” Fellow shopper Sharon added: “Greedflation at its best!!! Shocking!!!!!”
Meanwhile, a livid consumer called Sam said: “You gotta be taking the p***.” And a Tesco-goer named Jillian added: “I know I seen them. 22 pound disgusting only for the rich.”[sic]
Glenn also popped into B&M to see if they were offering any deals on his favourite Snickers Easter egg. Product prices were substantially lower, with Twix and Maltesers eggs on sale at £6, though the shopper is still not impressed with this price. There’s also a Galaxy version at just £3.50, which Glenn says “seems to be the standard at the moment” for 200g chocolate eggs.
However, Glenn also claims you can get them cheaper at Tesco and Morrisons. “The price of chocolate has gone through the roof,” said the savvy saver, whose supermarket deals Facebook group has over 416,000 members.
He continued: “I question whether suppliers and supermarkets are doing enough to keep the cost down. It’s pretty clear to me that you can just buy a chocolate bar which is the same in weight for a lot less.”
In response to the pricing row, a Tesco spokesperson said: “We have Easter eggs to suit every pocket at Tesco, with full-sized eggs for as little as £1.35 with a Tesco Clubcard to those containing full-sized toys.”
