Eggs keep fresh ‘for weeks longer’ when stored in 1 common kitchen place

By staff3 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

There are many ways to store eggs and everyone has their own preference. But according to an expert, these are the perfect conditions for storing your eggs to keep them fresh for longer

It’s the long old debate of where should you truly keep your eggs? Some people put them in the fridge, while others opt for a cupboard, draw or kitchen counter.

However some foodies reckon this is the best way to keep eggs fresher for longer with one certain kitchen item. When you buy eggs in store, you won’t ever find them in the fridges and there’s good reason for it.

They are always kept on the shelves instead as if they were bought cold, they would cause condensation on your journey home from the shift in temperature from the fridge to your basket or trolley. Then putting them back to your fridge again would invite condensation and attract bacteria.

So the optimal storing of eggs once bought, according to foodies at the Modern Milkman, is in the fridge. They say eggs can last for up to 3-4 weeks in the fridge before they begin to perish.

The experts stated: “The storing of eggs in your fridge in their original packaging is the best way of keeping them extra fresh. This will keep them at a consistent temperature, staving off spoilage and slowing bacterial growth.

“A temperature of 4C or lower will ensure your eggs stay fresh and delicious. And keeping eggs in their original packaging will protect their pores from being infiltrated by their new, perhaps stronger-smelling neighbours in the fridge.”

By keeping them in the packaging, it also helps remind you of their use-by date, and said the best place on a shelf inside the fridge, rather than in the fridge door.

“While many people prefer to have them in an easily and quickly accessible spot on the door, the temperature of this area fluctuates as you delve in and out of your fridge throughout the day,” the experts noted.

However if you have separated your yolk and egg white, you can still keep them fresh by leaving it in the fridge, just simply beat the yolk and put into an airtight container and they can last for up to three days.

Egg whites should also be kept in your fridge in a sealable bag or airtight container. You can also freeze them for up to three months, providing they’ve not been frozen before – but in the fridge, they can last for up to two days.

UK Gov says “eggs are safe to eat for a couple of days after the best before date”. The UK Food Standards Agency, on the other hand, advises against this, claiming “there is a greater chance of harmful bacteria growing in the eggs” after this date.
