The wife of El Chapo, Emma Coronel, has sparked controversy on TikTok after she flaunted a new tattoo. But curious social media users believe it has a different meaning
El Chapo’s wife has caused speculation on social media after she revealed her seemingly innocent tattoo – which has a hidden meaning.
Emma Coronel posted a video on her TikTok page as she promoted a healthy gummy supplement, to help people who are feeling “stressed out”. Speaking to her 40,000 followers, she said: “These gummies I dared to buy really help with stress. You still have the same worries and to-dos, but you’re more relaxed about them, and they also help you sleep. I take two in the morning and two in the afternoon.”
But TikTok users flooded the comments section after they noticed her “pizza slice” tattoo. Whilst some people complimented it, others insinuated that it could be linked to drug trafficking. “I don’t know why they let her out of jail,” said one user.
The former beauty queen had the ink placed on her forearm. She revealed the new marking in the video on March 13. According to local media, the pizza slice is reportedly connected to “La Chapiza” – a hitman group, known as the Sinaloa Cartel.
The Sinaloa Cartel, based in Culiacán, Mexico, is a powerful and violent transnational drug trafficking syndicate. Founded in the late 1960s, it evolved from a small crime group smuggling marijuana into the US to one of the most influential drug cartels globally.
Led by El Chapo for about 25 years, the cartel specialises in drug trafficking and money laundering. Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, now 67, was convicted of murder, conspiracy and drug charges in 2019. He is serving a life sentence plus 30 years at the Florence Supermax prison in Colorado, US.
The pizza slice is not Coronel’s first Chapo-themed tattoo. Last October, she showed off an inking of her and her husband’s initials, “E” and “J”, on her wrist. She mentioned at the time that El Chapo was not a fan of tattoos.
Coronel, 35, was arrested in the US on charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, and doing business with a designated foreign narcotics trafficker in 2021. She served a three-year prison sentence and was released in September 2023.
