A 105-year-old man on a mobility scooter was killed when he was hit by a car as he crossed a road in Uckfield, East Sussex, as police launched an appeal for witnesses
An elderly man driving a mobility scooter was killed when he was hit by a car as he crossed a busy road.
Sussex Police officers were called to the B2102 Bell Farm Road, near Uckfield on Saturday at around 1.45pm after reports of a collision. The 105-year-old man was hit by a blue Ford KA as he crossed the road aboard his mobility scooter and paramedics and police attended. He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers in the wake of the accident, which saw the road closed.
The driver of the car, an 87-year-old woman, was unhurt. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “A 105-year-old man has sadly died following a collision in Uckfield.
“He had been crossing the B2102 Bell Farm Road, east of the junction with Brookside, in his mobility scooter when he was struck by a blue Ford KA. Police were alerted to the incident at 1.44pm on Saturday 5 April and responded to the scene.
“Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man, from Uckfield, was pronounced deceased. His next of kin have been informed and supported by specialist officers.
“The KA driver, an 87-year-old woman from Ringmer, was uninjured. A section of the road was temporarily closed while emergency services worked at the scene.”
Several people were saddened by the accident. One person said: “Oh this sounds so tragically sad and maybe something that shouldn’t have happened? So sad to live to that age and end up losing their life in this way.
“Just as sad for the lady aged 85 to have been involved in this way. Awful news for both of the families.”
Another added: “How sad to get to that age and to die like that, RIP condolences to his family and friends.”
