Elon Musk is practically joined at the hip with President-elect Trump, and will even play a key role in his White House administration. However, this friendship is relatively new, with Musk previously savaging his billionaire buddy in a scathing tweet
Elon Musk now appears to be best pals with Donald Trump – which may come as somewhat of a surprise to those who’ve followed his tweeting history.
The tech mogul has been practically joined at the hip with the President-elect over the past few months, showing up to rallies with a MAGA hat and a grin, while photos show the billionaire buddies embracing with affection. President-elect Trump even gushed: ‘I love you Elon!’ in his hasty victory speech, delivered before the official results had even landed.
And now Musk will even be joining his new friend in the White House, as the co-lead of the new “Department of Government Efficiency”, alongside ex-presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. It’s perhaps easy to see why Musk suddenly holds such a special place in the Apprentice star turned politician’s heart.
Having once shown support for Democrat President Barack Obama, Musk’s allegiances have since changed sharply, and he’s certainly demonstrated his loyalty to Trump with his wallet. Indeed, over approximately $75million (£58million) to American PAC – the committee he founded to support Trump’s re-election bid.
It’s clear that Musk was hellbent on getting Trump back in the Oval Office. But as recently as 2022, the X owner, previously Twitter, seemed a little uncertain at best about the impeached President’s fitness for the top job, as evidenced in a telling tweet.
In July 2022, Musk took to X – then still known as Twitter – to respond to scathing comments Trump had made about him during an event in Alaska. Referring to Musk supporting his presidential opponents in both 2016 and 2020, Trump raged: “He said the other day, ‘Oh, I’ve never voted for a Republican. I said, ‘I didn’t know that. He told me he voted for me, so he’s another bull**** artist.”
Commenting under a video showing footage from the heated rally, Musk wrote: “I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat and sail into the sunset. Dems should also call off the attack – don’t make it so that Trump’s only way to survive is to regain the Presidency.”
When asked what issues he had specifically with Trump’s presidency, Musk reflected that there was just ‘too much drama’. He reasoned: “Do we really want a bull in a china shop situation every single day!? Also, I think the legal maximum age for start of Presidential term should be 69.”
At 78, President-elect Trump has a fair few years on that maximum age limit – but this no longer seems to bother Musk. Indeed, their previous squabble appears to be water under the bridge, with Musk said to have been a constant presence at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort since the victory celebrations began.
And it would seem his colossal political shift has paid off handsomely. Forbes reports that, as of Monday, November 11, his net worth was up by around $54 billion since Tuesday, November 5, rising to $319 billion.
